As with most petitioners here, I wish to go to the consulate interview with my fiance'e.

What I would like to know is:

Is it mandatory that I attend with her.

Do they(consulate) frown on the petitioner not being there?

any input for experienced vj members would be greatly appreciated

Be advised some consulates do not allow the USC to be in the interview with their beneficienary. You will need to check on the embassy websites for more information on your particular consulate office. So the answer to your questions is no, it is not mandatory that you go to the interview. Hope this helps and good luck to you.

The embassy's are aware that life does not stop for this process, some people have employment responsibilities and are not able to make the interview while others do not have the finances to travel for the interview only to come back in a few weeks to escort thier fiance to the POE. I am sure they love to see the support but I do not think it is a deal breaker by any means. Best of luck to you

No, it is not mandatory. It's always better if you go, but not required. In Lima, there isn't an actual interview. They process all the papers at a window and ask a few questions. It was more like a short conversation, nothing like sitting down alone in a room with the consulate and being asked questions. The actual consulate does not process the papers or ask questions. When your called to the consulate window she just takes your fingerprints and tells you to go to DHL outside the embassy. Good Luck!

reads the results on the Peru consulate. Then decide. As always, YMMV. It depends on how strong the relationship is, How long the relationship is. How articulate your spouse is, and how confident they are in those kinds of situations. You have to decide for yourself. Nothing is easy. Sometimes there is a not a right or wrong answer, but what is the best answer between you and your fiance. Always follow your heart. You may end up waiting outside, but does the re-assurance outweigh the nervousness. No one can tell you one way or another.

Best of luck.

gretchen_darren stated it best! I did attend with my spouse and if was good that I did. Although, the petitioner was said not to be able to attend, I made my way into the interview. It is not mandatory but for me it was good idea because some embassies have requested a 2nd interview with the petitioner present so to avoid this issue, I was there even if I weren't allowed inside...

consulate specific answer required

Consulate specific questions or questions related to the consulate process are best posted in the consulate forum, moving thread

A couple of the early answers are stated in misleading terms, or they can be seriously misconstrued, with potentially severe consequences.

No, it's not "mandatory," unless your Embassy Reviews or other posters who have interviewed at your consulate tell you that it is, on the basis of their experience or warnings from others. This aside, your presence can be well worth it for your beneficiary's confidence level, and for emotional support.

In answer to your second question, it never hurts and may help (and may even save the day) when the petitioner is on the consular premises during the beneficiary's interview. If you're not allowed into the actual interview, give your U.S. passport to the beneficiary, who can then show it to the CO as evidence of your presence and of a bona fide relationship. This alone could turn a borderline case into a successful one, and you may well be invited in to speak with the CO yourself (a very good sign).

Taking the consular phase of the process lightly is foolhardy to the extreme.
