Another way of looking at it....

McCain lost by 6% in 2008 when Obama was at his peak.

If McCain ran again in 2012, 4 years older....he would probably close the gap from 6% to 2.5 to 3%....And lets not forget McCain is probably the worst possible candidate the GOP could have put up.

GOP puts up a halfway decent candidate and Obama will be easily defeated in 2012....It is pretty simple and anyone who doesn't see that must still be getting shivers up their legs and up their spine when Obama talks.

I actually think McCain was a strong candidate. Far stronger than anyone visible today. Problem was he was too middle of the road for the GOP and he became a different person during the election...then they threw Palin in there.

I think if he had retained his independent streak it would have been closer. Though your right Obama had a ton of momentum. Obama will have less this election but so will the GOP.

The GOP needs to field a candidate that excites their base and appeals to independents......I don't see anyone ticking both boxes out of the current crop

He is currently being assembled by defense contractors with several grants from oil companies and the technological expertise provided by AIPAC.

Just to add, McCain also had to fight the Bush Legacy.

If he has nominated someone like Tim Pawlenty or Kay Bailey Hutchinson for VP he would have been more formidable I think.

But neither of those choices would have fired up the base as Palin did. Of course, Palin turned off a lot of independent voters.

You haven't cought up on Rush's program.

"Our military wanted to go in there and just scorch the earth," Limbaugh continued, "but President Obama single-handedly understood what was at stake here. He alone understood the need to get DNA to prove the death ... it was President Obama single-handedly and alone who came up with the strategy that brought about the effective assassination of Osama bin Laden," the radio host said, concluding, "Thank God for President Obama."

Aside from that, I agree that this will not seal his re-election bid. The GOP is doing that for him.

He was being a smart ####### but you probably already knew that.

You said the middle class "doesn't exist anymore" in the U.S.

That an individual American may have better access to health care and housing in Russia doesn't prove that point at all.

However, the mere existence of a single middle-class individual in the U.S. does effectively rebut your point.

What's left of the middle class here in the US? It's dying out.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

That would mean that all of the halfway decent or better potential GOP candidates are getting shivers up their legs and up their spine when obama talks. If they thought that he can be easily defeated, there would be a crowd of serious contenders for the GOP nomination by now. And what do we actually have? Romney and crickets. That situation just doesn't reconcile with the claim that Obama is going to be easy to beat in 2012.
