In a similar way, one should not allow contact lenses to come into contact with saliva -- herpes infections in the eyes can be very dangerous.

As for oral - genital self transmission -- I wouldn't have thought it possible but apparently it isn't impossible.

Now, can't rule out that OP's husband isn't looking for cover and an alibi -- she knows his character and we don't. OP's husband raises an interesting concern, though. I guess the answer is to avoid saliva and avoid the path of self-transmission.
