Take a look at the train line between Tucson and San Antonio? Do you really think that's energy efficient? Or the route between West Glacier and Minneapolis?

If there is to be faith in trains, the network has to be reduced. Amtrak has been crying itself hoarse about how the NEC makes money but no one has been paying attention because in the annual report they lose money overall.

Sometimes, ya gotta take a step back to move forward. Amtrak ought to be operating in the NEC alone. Maybe SF-LA. And maybe in a few other lines where the economy is growing. For example, the DC-Charlotte-Atlanta line. Everything else can pretty much go and no one would notice.

ps. did you notice the oklahoma city to san antonio line doesn't actually pass through dallas? it's insanity. shut that ####### down.

As much as I hate to admit it (as I hate spending money on trains) a Dallas/Fort Worth to Austin/San Antonio/Houston route for HSR would do really really well... A lot of people jump on planes because it's a short flight.. but if you could hop on a train and get moving and not have the airport security checks/waiting around, then people would definitely go for it.

We have one train incident, and you bet the TSA will be doing the same thing to riders that they are doing at the airports.

Do they have that in London after the incident a few years ago?

How are the highways between DFW and Austin/San Antonio/Houston?

If the highways between NYC and DC weren't already at capacity, I doubt there would be any demand for rail at all.

The Amtrak is mostly business travelers M-F. The trains are packed during weekday rush hours. Lots of sales people, lots of executives. There is big money in this corridor so the trains are full of people trying to get some of theirs.

I (L) trains. I can work on stuff and stuff get where I need to be without getting a sinus infection from flying. I also (L) driving but some trips are too long or have too much traffic for me to want to do it.

they have transit police and sometimes you see someone standing around with a big gun

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

I am waiting for the day when the TSA just says that they will body scan anyone leaving or entering their own home.whistling.gif

no worries, it will happen soon enough.

major cities around the world with CCTV cameras watching every last angle in the name of 'safety.'

Nothing like that is in the name of safety and pure idiocy puts something like that into place if it is. There are plenty out there who would use it to their advantage.
