Texas poised to pass bill allowing guns on campus

Utah has allowed college students to carry guns for years.

We never hear of college shooting massacres there.

When the criminals know the good people can pack heat, too, then the bad guys think twice and don't feel so powerful.

I see the value of being able to defend oneself or others in some shootouts, where crazies open fire. But I am also reminded that having a green light to be armed, also removes some of the apprehension of seeing a weapon that can be used for such craziness.

Texas has had campus shootouts hasn't it?

The most famous being the "Texas Tower" incident in 1966 at the University of Texas.

Why would anyone carry out such "craziness" when there is a good chance the victims may shoot back? It isn't a matter of if Texas has had school shootings. They have. The question is "When has one of these incidents occurred where the victims were possibly armed?"

The "crazies" are just smart enough to choose unarmed victims.

I don't think crazies particularly care if their victims are armed or not. There's something about not being mentally fit...

Anyway, Texas campuswide shootings should decrease if this bill is executed.

Vermont allows it also. No homicides here on college campuses. Almost none anywhere in the entire state.

Unlike our "unarmed" neighbors to the north who had a shooting massacre at a downtown Montreal college just a couple years ago. Unarmed Montrasl is like the wild west compared to heavily armed Vermont. Canada has three times the murder rate of Vermont.

If crazies do not care, why would campus shootings decrease?

I think I remember that shooting spree. McGill? It was some guy upset with women that were smarter than him.

To answer your question though, those were two separate comments.

You might as well let people go aboard airplanes armed to the teeth too. Eliminate the TSA and let the law of the jungle be our guide.

Besides...what do you know about Nazis except that the mere drop of that term is supposed to bolster your position? Comparing America to Nazi-ism is laughable. It really diminishes what Nazi-ism really was.

The TSA has gone far beyond what it should have ever been and should be eliminated.

Security is one thing. Groping is another.

False sense of security in my eyes.

Ft. Hood was full of people carrying guns - and yes, some of them eventually took out Major Hassan, but not before he had killed how many people? Anyone who thinks this will stop (or seriously limit) the next Virginia Tech is living in a dreamworld.

Increase access to guns and you increase the chances of them being used. That's the simple fact. Per capita (in the ten years to 2005) there were EIGHTY (80) times as many gun related injuries and deaths in my state (Colorado) where gun laws are relatively lax, compared with the UK, where they are highly restricted.

I know where I feel safer from violent crime - and it aint in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains!

i've been assigned to ft hood about 4 times, and people don't "run around carrying guns" - the guns are locked up in the armory. additionally, when people do have their individual weapon, they don't have any ammo - and that's for fun stuff like a road march. if they went to the range, they were issued the ammo at the range after being trucked there by army vehicles (it's against regulations to transport military weapons in a privately owned vehicle). the place the shooting took place at is about 2 miles inside the main gate far from any ranges.

full of people carrying guns indeed

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

A point I made to you in the past, the military don't allow people to 'run around with guns' willy nilly. Now, tell me why again? A safety issue perhaps?

Nothing to do with safety? Visiting this topic again would be fun. I love seeing you wriggle around trying to explain why the military don't like their guns and ammo sitting around a barracks unaccounted for, it's such fun.

Tell me, are soldiers allowed to bring their own weapons and ammo on to barracks for personal protection? You know, in case of a soldier running amok and catching them with their pants down as it were because the government owned ones are safely, sorry locked away for no good reason.

The military is the one instance in which a US Citizens suspends a good amount of his/her rights that the average citizen has. There are ALOT of things that military personell are not allowed to do/have to go through that you or I may or may not have to.

The AF has something most people dont know about, its called a 523, authorization to bear arms. For those required to bear arms in daily performance of their duty they are issued this card. Now this card can also have the words "concealed" on it which allows the bearer to conceal arms for line of duty purposes.

The armed services do have more than the normal amount of unstable personal due to attending a war zone so perhaps more caution.

If more citizens were armed, criminals would think twice about attacking them, Detroit Police Chief James Craig

Florida currently has more concealed-carry permit holders than any other state, with 1,269,021 issued as of May 14, 2014
