Good day! I'm a newbie and I have been reading most of the posts here and found them really helpful.

I am in the middle of my AOS and I just have a question to ask. Does it really make a difference if you acquire the services of an Immigration lawyer to get through this? Is there someone here who went through the whole process successfully without ever needing one?

Thanks! :)

P.S: I am currently being represented by a lawyer (thanks to my husband's insistence, LOL). Just wanted to know other people's views on this.

You'll have less money in your wallet using a lawyer. That is certain.

The 'majority' of people are successful on there own with out any set-backs, and some have problems! It's all in the planning and preparations. One does not plan to fail they just fail to plan. With that said if you have the time to invest and feel comfortable with the process go for it! Some people's time is more valuable or they simply don't wont/can't deal with the paperwork, they may have complications involved so they enlist the services of a (qualified immigration attorney). If your one of them hire someone to do the job. Only you know your situation and if you can handle the job. Read the 'Guides' spend some time on the site and ask question!

Depends on the nature of your case! If it is complicated, consult a lawyer, if not, VJ members are here to help people out! Plus, there are a ton of resources on here as well as on the Internet which will help you!

Never used a lawyer for any of this process and was successful. Most here have been able to not use a lawyer and get through this. In fact read further and you will find that many times lawyers have made mistakes and it usually takes longer besides costing a ton of money.

I also did a divorce 15 years ago with no lawyer and have sued and won twice with no lawyer. Lawyers are totally not needed for any part of this process ever unless one has no abilities at all and can hardly function in society.

Thanks for your replies, guys! :)

Had I learned about this forum sooner, I would ask my then-fiance to check this out first before deciding if we should get a lawyer or not. They don't come in cheap. :(

Well, lesson learned.

In our case, the attorney we hired, ended up adding an extra year almost onto our whole ordeal. I wish I knew about VJ before we went through all that heartache.

Invictus..

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

That's what i'm scared of too. My husband admitted that he did not do a good job researching for efficient law firms, just contacted one firm out if the blue. although we are basing it on Google comments that we saw but then they can be done by their competitors.
