Ten years ago I was admitted to the USA on J1 visa and at this time I applied and received a Social Security number and card. The annotation on the card states: VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION. I have recently arrived to the States on K1 visa and I was wondering if I can use my old card to open bank account/get car insurance/ driver's licence etc. Is it still valid or do I need to get a new one?

Many thanks for your replies.

Yes you can use this SSN. You might eventually want to update your status but you don't have to yet, the J1 status on it doesn't do anything to it's validity except in terms of working.

You can update your SSN now, once you're married, when you have your EAD or your GC. Updating with your greencard will have the "DHS authorisation required" removed.

ya - you can use it -

but -

2 weeks after yer POE date - you might want to think about getting a new one via going into the office.

apply in yer VISA NAME, and ask the clerk to look you up in the SAVE database

and then

come back 2 days later - talk with clerk at desk - CONFIRM that the application was successful.

it triggers some status with SSA that yer here, fwiw...

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Sure you can use the number and the card, legally: it's yours for life!

I've had mine for 20 years now and never updated nothing.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915
