My husband received his temporary green card last year. We are planning a trip back to his home country to meet his family. But he has realized that his passport is missing. From what I understand the only way he can get a new passport is to travel to his home country, but how can he travel there with no passport? I am new to travelling internationally. Originally he was thinking he could travel to Guinea since he is still a citizen without a passport and get a new passport when he gets there. But would he be able to return to the US? Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum. Just looking for some help. Thanks.

When you travel internationally the airlines will want to see documents that show that you will be allowed into your destination country. If not they are subject to huge fines. For his home country it is a passport , for others it can be a visa or his passport. To travel you need a government issues photo ID , this is normally your passport. In cases where you lose it and it can't be issued locally that countries embassy can issue travel papers. ( the US embassy can do this for you if your passport gets stolen) He will still need photo ID ( green card) and unless you are traveling directly there you have to worry about rules for stop over destinations.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

the airline may not check you in without a passport... you may need to check with the carrier. The traveller has a green card so it seems safe to say the passport is that of another country.. The US/US EMBASSY/ etc cannot issue any document that would ALLOW you to travel.. that is the purpose of the Green card. If the passport is lost check out

Embassy

The Republic of Guinea

2112 Leroy Place, NW, Washington DC 20008

Telephone: (202) 986-4300

or contact

Consulate General of Guinea

201 East 42nd Street New York

Phone: 212-557-5001

IF you're unable to replace the passport then the trip seems as it it would be postponed... unless a deal could be cut with the Airlines..

I'm not familar with Gineau immigration laws, but how are you going to get into the country, let alone on the plane, without a passport? How will you prove your citizenship without your passport?

As far as I know, if you're entering a country (coming from another country), you need your passport to prove you are allowed to enter said country. I've never heard of using any other identification (except for some military etc) being accepted when you enter and get processed by Immigration officers.

I'm sorry I don't have a solution, I just wanted to point out that you may have issues entering the country since no one has brought that up yet.

Thanks for your help, it was actually as simple as calling the Embassy in Washington D.C. and we just has to send them a copy of his Birth Certificate, a couple of forms of I.D. etc. and a $60 fee they were able to send him paperwork to get back to Guinea where he can get a new passport. I do appreciate the help. Thanks!
