Thanks to you all.

Never would only be used to answer the question about previous trips to the USA if never is the answer.

For NONE or N/A here's an example. If asked for the name of a former spouse, NONE would be the answer if never married before. A subsequent question like the date of birth of the non-existent spouse would therefore be N/A (Not applicable) You would not answer N/A for the former spouse's name, because the question is applicable. Only the question as to further information about the NONE former spouse is N/A

If you have no children the answer is NONE or NO CHILDREN, not N/A, again, because the question is applicable.

There's one place on the DS230 where NEVER is applicable.

i am told by my lawyer to use the word NONE. do not use N/A on any of the forms. N/A is not an answer.

N/A means not applicable. Since most questions ARE applicable, NONE is nearly always the correct answer. However, there are times when N/A is appropriate. A common example is in section 13 of the I-130, where after checking the box that you were born in the USA, you would enter N/A in the following two text fields asking for Certificate Numbers. Those questions become N/A when you answer that you were born in the USA. Get it?

Many just leave those fields blank and get away with it. I prefer to enter N/A there.

Agreeing with Push here. N/A means "not applicable", "none" means the answer is applicable but you have nothing to put there.

This may come as a shock, but not all lawyers know everything.
