It's been about 3 years since I last replaced my carpet. I want to rip out the carpet off-white carpet that I have now and put in something new. I was wondering if anyone know how much carpet I would need for a room that's 9 square meter big? Obviously, I'm not trying to ask how many people will fit in a plane that holds 100 people. That'd be silly. I heard that when buying carpet you are supposed to buy more. How much more carpet do I need? Would 10% more be a good bet?

Go to a carpet store. They will tell you how much you need. They measure the room and you only order the amount you need. Anything extra would be wasting money. What would you do with the extra carpet?

I went to a carpet store. They want $35 dollars (that's a week's worth of petrol for me) to come out and meassure my house. I'd be willing to pay that if I was 100% certain that I'm replacing the carpet. Despite, I want an independent estimate so I can compare once the carpet guy gives me the total. The reason you need extra carpet is to be able to tuck it under the wall, etc. Ten percent more might be overkill. Maybe 2% more carpet is enough. I don't know. I hope to learn.

Depends on the dimensions of the room and the width of the roll of carpet. From a web search:

"Carpet is manufactured in variety of widths, (12 ft, 13'6", and 15 ft) but most carpet is manufactured in 12-foot widths only. Simply measuring the dimensions of a room may not provide an accurate carpet measurement of the amount required. For example, a 10-ft by 10-ft room provides an area of 100 square feet. Since carpet is manufactured in 12-foot widths, 100 square feet equals 12 ft (width) by 8' 4" (length) of carpet. Purchasing only 100 square ft of carpet would require seaming the 2 foot waste on from the 12 foot width as six 2 ft by 1' 8" seams across the length of the carpet to fit the 10 ft by 10 ft room. In this instance, 120 square feet of carpet would be required to properly install a 100 square foot room."

Seams tend to be the most difficult aspect of carpet installation and you definitely do not want them in high traffic areas. What is the dimension of your room? Is it square or irregular?

I understand about carpet installation because my family has owned carpet stores for about 40 years. I thought you were talking about buying extra and installing it yourself.

Maybe call another carpet store and tell them a different place said they will measure for free

i'd suggest you determine first if the room can be fitted with a 12 or 15 foot roll. once you do that, then go carpet shopping at a place that has those rolls. 12 foot, as mentioned earlier, is the most common. however, if your room is something like 13x14, a 15' roll will do it in one piece.

avoid seaming carpet if you can, go with the one piece if possible.

That's exactly why I posted this question here. Because there was a chance someone here was either involved with carpet business or had experiences with this. I appreciate your help and your grandfather's also.

Don't be so cheap.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I paid the $35 and someone is coming out at 1000 hours today to meassure the house. I wanted an estimate from another source. For comparative reasons. The reason I am replacing the carpet is because it's a off-white color. It's very simple. It'll probably last for many years. That's why I'm not 100% certain if I'll replace it at all. Unless replacing it is within my budget and I can find something that fancies my tastes.
