I'd pick India since my husband is from there, my in-laws and their extended relatives are there, plus, I've already been there 3 times. Language-wise, while in Delhi and Mumbai many people knew English, plus many signs, menus, etc are in English. That's helpful. I'd think India could be off the 3rd world list eventually, but there is still a lot of poverty mixed in with modern, high tech stuff. (I've never been to another 3rd world country yet.)

Married since 9-18-04(All K1 visa & GC details in timeline.)

Very visible disparities in income is pretty much one of the things that identifies a nation as developing, IMO.

Other than England and Wales, I've only ever been to Turkey, France and the US.

If I had to pick one on the list, I would choose China. Why? No big reason, looks cool. And because it's close to Japan/S Korea and I have an interest in their culture.

I'd have to go with Maldives. A nice beachfront bungalow would be just fine.

The Philippines probably around Tagatay or Subivc Bay. The reasons would be it is beautiful and I have family and friends there. To protect myself I would use the same measures as in the USA. Link "the United States does have a murder rate 4 times higher than most western European nations"

If I had to pick a 3rd World Country to live in, i'd choose Cleveland. I know, I know, It's a city, but have you been there? it's like a whole other world

People who live in London, ON or LA aren't allowed to make fun of Cleveland. Those are funny videos though.

Mr. Saigon, thanks for the info!

The issue is that the term "third world country" is misunderstood by most people. It was originally a cold-war term that in modern context doesn't really make sense. The "first world" was the West (the US, Western Europe, and some other capitalist democratic nations like Australia, for instance). The "second world" was the Eastern Bloc (China, the USSR and its allies and satellites). The "third world" was everyone else. Although a lot of these countries were less developed, that was not a requirement.

When people try to tell me that the US, Russia, or China are "third world countries," I mostly just laugh at their ignorance. It contradicts the definition. Undeveloped, maybe. But not "third world." The term "third world countries" needs to die and be replaced by something that actually makes sense like "undeveloped countries" or "developing countries."

Yet another case of, "You keep on using that word; I do not think it means what you think it means."

you are correct that it is a misunderstood term (as seen by some comments in this thread)... but i disagree on 'developed/undeveloped' because there are so many variables which would make the list fluid.

"global south" is a much better term.

info on english speaking/signage is great, thanks.

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.

I just found out Texas is poor so I will stay there.good.gif

I was about to say, you don't need to move far at all.

I've never been to Cleveland but I have been to Youngstown, Ohio. That's pretty close to third world if you ask me.

A large part of Ohio is third world. A certain poster's comments from there reinforce this stereotype about the state.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
