I took a CBEST test several months ago to qualify as a substitute teacher. Part of the exam was written (essay). While the grading may be more subjective, it does demonstrate the writing aptitude of the candidates much better than multiple choice.

Unfortunately, an essay test can't test for quantitative skills. Besides that I agree - writing skills are revealing and important.

while I may agree to some extent about Essay writing possibly showing more aptitude for an individual they must first be able to write and maintain a comprehension of a subject of which to competently write.

so which type of testing will need to be changed if the individuals can not do either?

Just maybe and think it a better telling feature is that the students that do better on the test are the ones that study and get tutor or extra help on any deficients found.

As an example. My Uncle in law has 6 kids. All are doctors except one and he is a well paid software engineer. They came to this country as refugees and had several interruptions over years until they finally were able to place firm roots in one place. I asked one how they were able to achieve so well and he told me that they were no smarter than anyone else but they did study a lot and worked harder. They all did well on the entrance exams because they knew what they were going to do and knew it was an important test and studied for it.

A black girlfriend I had many years ago was had surpassed everything threw her way by also studying extra hard. Her parents made her study and enforced good school habits from an early age. I have known many Asians and all had families that pushed them to excel in the classroom from a early age. The one thing I have found that determined good grades is studying. What would have kids from an early age to study? I have found it is a parent or both parents have instilled this in them from early on.

To say that blacks as a group are inferior in thinking is wrong. There have been many blacks who were genius's and who excelled at everything they did. Any inner city school that has a high percentage of bad scores always has some that do well and I can bet that the ones that do well study and the reason they do so is because they have someone that pushes that value on them from an early age.

didnt read any of the thread because I'm lazy (my dad is mxcan) but at the inner school where I teach all students have to take the SAT or ACT to graduate. It doesnt matter the score. But they must take the exam at some point to graduate.

 are you suggesting these two thoughts are somehow related?

Nice baiting attempt A.J.

Now putt off the show and try attempt to explain the differences in your own opinion.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

The SATs are all about knowing how to take them. Even with training though, some people are just never going to get it. I worked as an SAT tutor and my students, even though they were paying many thousands of dollars to be coached, made the most miserably small improvements. I only taught white kids though, which might explain the poor performance.

You'd think with the highest levels of hand-holding, some of these rich caucasian suburbanites would excel more. Alas, some cultures are just lazier and more entitled than others. I expect some of them have had to settle for their second choice legacy college and might eventually be forced to keep only one yacht. Or a yacht and a smaller motorboat, for shorter jaunts and cruising.

Sounds like something is wrong with the tutor here.

With so many on here who talk out of their azz, it's hard to distinguish legitimate discusison from sarcasm or baiting tactics.

I can buy you a Kimodo Dragon for your exotic animal enclosure if it makes you feel better. And a yacht. Then you can do a sort of BY's Ark type of thing. Everything will be unironic and misted with a delicate salty sheen as you sail off toward the Isle of Strident Opinion.
