hi,

i just received my SS card and a welcome notice (I-797C, NOA) from USCIS. but my name (still my maiden name) is totally wrong.

i actually want to change my legal name to a totally different married name. e.g. from Yin Cheung to Fiona Harrison (my husband's last name). my marriage certificate has only my maiden name and i dont have a court document (dont know if it's needed).

do u think it's possible to change to the new married name at all when i file for I-90 for the SS and USCIS errors? what steps should i take now?

pls help. thank you.

From what I have read you have to contact USCIS and SSA separately.

I'd suggest you contact USCIS first, so when your name is corrected, then you can go to the SSA office and get your card corrected (they have to match your name in the USCIS system).

The I-90 is only filed if there was a correction to your green card.

How about your EAD? is the name correct there? If it isn't then you have to request for a replacement EAD card. USCIS will correct it for free if the error was theirs; however if the error was because you typed the wrong name on your application form, then you have to pay $340 and biometrics.

Here's the SSA link on how to change the name on your card: http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/315/~/changing-your-name-on-your-social-security-card.

thanks for your help. i called both hotlines to get the correction done. will not be 'Fiona Harrison' though.

Go to your local courthouse and get the name changed there - should cost around $100. Then go about changing all other documents.
