they have a deal right now for free (copy/paste from their site):

"Use our Phone Service for free, make all the free calls you please. 100% Risk FREE - you pay nothing. (Hurry, less than 10,000 magicJacks are eligible to be shipped for the Free Trial Offer Today, Monday, August 30, 2010. This offer is not available in stores and will expire.) "

keep in mind though magicjack is only for usa/canada... that cuts out a lot of people.

It's only for people in the US/Canada but they can make any unlimited calls to the rest of the world? Or the US/Canada can only call people in the US/Canada? And its a thing you have to plug into your computer? Does that mean you can only make calls from your computer? Because the whole reason I use Rebtel in the first place is that the only time I can call my fiance is on my lunch break during the week and I don't have my computer with me then, only my cell phone.

Thank you for the info. For me, it worked during the free test call, but then my fiance tried to call back after instructing him to hang up and dial back to the number that appeared on his phone and the call did not connect :(

We can maybe try again before giving it up entirely. Anybody else knows about another company or companies that offer similarly free (or close to free) calling services?

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

After 150 days of imposed anxious patience...

January 24, 2011 - Per USCIS website, petition approved and notice mailed.

January 31, 2011 - Approval receipt notice (NOA 2) received by mail. Called NVC, given Santo Domingo case number, and informed that petition was sent same day to consulate.

Called Visa Specialist at the Department of State every day for a case update. Informed of interview date on February, 16 2011. Informed that packet was mailed to fiance on February, 15 2011.

February 21, 2011 - Fiance has not yet received packet. Called 1-877-804-5402 (Visa Information Center of the United States Embassy) to request a duplicate packet in person pick-up at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. Packet can be picked-up by fiance on 02/28.

March 1, 2011 - Medical exam completed at Consultorios de Visa in Santo Domingo.

March 9, 2011 at 6 AM - Interview, approved!

March 18, 2011 - POE together. JFK and O'Hare airports. Legal wedding: May 16, 2011.

Did you hang up when your fiance also hung up? I forgot to mention that the person who places the call is not supposed to hang up, only the receiver of the call. If thats not the case, maybe he has to sign up on Rebtel too (its free so that shouldn't be a problem). I can't remember if thats the case or not. Both my fiance and I have our own account though, so maybe thats it? If neither of those helps, sometimes on rare occasions it just doesn't work. You just have to hang up and try again. If that doesn't work then I'm not sure what the problem is. What exactly went wrong? It should have gone like this

you: dials fiances rebtel #

automated rebtel voice: you have run out of credit, please buy some more credit or ask your friend to call you back to make a free call while you stay on the line.

phone rings

fiance: answers phone, hangs up phone, redials # that showed up on caller ID

you: waits patiently

phone rings

lines connect and make a little weird bong noise and then you can talk to each other!

on rare occasions it doesn't work and the line just keeps ringing and ringing. In that case you just have to hang up and try again. Barring that, I don't have any idea why it didn't work. Hopefully you can figure it out so you can talk to your fiance for free!

I'm sorry i cant answer any of your questions, i've never used it but i went to their website and saw that offer so thought i'd post it. my husband is in pakistan so it wouldnt work for us so i didnt check any further into it.

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.

I was just going to say this!

You actually can use MagicJack to communicate with your SO in countries other than US and Canada. You have to send (or bring) a MagicJack USB dongle to them. They plug it into their computer and then they can call anywhere in the US or Canada for one low annual fee. I gave one to my wife when she was still in Vietnam and we used it to talk all the time. It will work anywhere in the world with reasonably decent internet service.

I gave my wife a magic jack and she calls me from her computer or I can call to her when her computer is on and the magic jack is on. She is in Ukraine. It doesn't anything excpet for the $40 purchase price, if I remember correctly, and the $20 yearly subscription fee. It works very well but I want to try rebtel so we can talk on her mobile.

I just checked the rates for Ukraine. They are .119 for land line and .149 for mobile. That is what I pay with my current international calling service. I use Mastercall. It was worth a try. I will stay with Mastercall and Magic Jack. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

are you able to do a copy/paste of the countries that are free? or perhaps a screen shot if it doesnt allow copy/paste?

it looks really similar to OneSuite.com (i've used them since 2002) but they dont have the free thing. gratis es bueno!

Onesuite doesn't have free countries but their rates are cheap and its accessible via regular phone or internet so you can make calls either way.
