Name change on passport

Hi guys!!

I have read some topics and I believe most of them say its ok.

But just let me ask again, please...

Would it be ok for me to get a new passport in my home country with my married name on it? I have read it's easier to do it while you're still in your country if you want your green card to have your married name. But my husband is scared that this can mess us up when we go to the interview. As a matter of fact, when we filed our I-130 and all NVC Documentation, our lawyer filed my name as Liz Married and in "other names used" he wrote Liz Single, however in the payment portal my name shows as Liz Single (which is my legal name, that's whats on the birth and marriage certificate).

So, would it be ok for me to get my new passport with my married name and bring that to the interview?

I changed my name and got a whole new passport about 2 weeks before our interivew - even though I'd submitted all the documents in my maiden name. It was not an issue. I brought my old passports to the interview but they weren't asked for.

No issues in changing your name - much easier to do it now so the visa and green card will be issued in your new name, expensive and time consuming to do it once you get to the US

Yup - you can do - no problems.

The visa can be issued in the new name, you'll need to show the VO on interview day, as well.

If you change names in your passport - in general are you asked to submit Police Clearance Certificates in both names?

Yes - if you change your name, the police check will need to be done in both names. Unless you have a fingerprint check done like I had

Your green card will be issued in the name on your passport so if you are planning on changing your name it is less expensive to do it prior to the visa being issued. Changing your green card after the fact will add quite a few $ to the process.

As far as the police certificates go they should be done in all names used by that person. So for a women, her maiden name, previously used married name and new married name (if applicable.)

Depending on what part of India you are in. In Gujarat there is an option to get it in one week and obviously They charge mote but worth it. Standard Is 3-4 weeks

Unless there are different customs in India that I am not aware of, you cannot change your name until you are married.

I didn't becuase it was a huge hassle in Canada. You have to go to each office separetly and bring an enormous amount of documentation with you. Some countries is just easier than othes, I'm glad Finland seems to be one of them

Yeah, it's really easy in Finland. Only paperwork I had to do because of it was to get a new passport and work permit( in my job I need a permit from the police)
