I was in the car today and heard a commercial for free cell phones. Apparently, people on government benefits like food stamps, WIC, HEAP, etc., may be "entitled" to a free mobile.

Not just for emergencies or anything. According to the ad, you could get free UNLIMITED minutes for a year.

My favorite part, and the one that really got me p!ssed, was at the end, the announcer said in a loud voice:

"EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT!!!!"

So, folks on goverment benefits have the "right" to a free cell phone on my tax dollars. Awesome.

Its not exactly on the tax payers dime. Its funded out of the Universal Service Fee which is paid by anyone who has a phone line. The program funds part of the cost of a land line, or more recently, cell phones for people making up to 125% of the poverty level.

Have you ever examined why the thought of helping those with nothing bothers you so much? Do you have a philosophy worked out about it? I'm curious.

Yes, I actually have pondered this. There are a couple reasons.

1. Charity should be voluntary. The government extorts money from it's citizens and then government officials decide to be generous with other people's money. I myself actually donate significant amounts of money to charity but have a huge issue with other people forcing me to do it. The idea of being generous with someone else's money is a very hypocritical and troublesome notion.

2. I work 40+ hours a week to support my family. Time is money. As it turns out, I work about 3.5 days a week to take home money and 1.5 days a week for taxes, etc. I would love to have another day and a half a week to spend with my wife and kid. But as it is, instead of that, I'm working another day and a half so some bum can have a cell-phone. That is frustrating, considering this bum probably isn't working and has 7 days a week to spend with his family.

i was answering your question of why some of us have a problem with it. for the average person, the right to a cell phone costs us money.

It's crucial for people trying to claw their way out of despair. If you don't have a phone you are completely screwed.

I would think someone "clawing" would be able to get a phone on their own. At the very least they'd figure out how to find gainful employment.

I've always wondered why there hasn't been a huge push from the LEFT to buy us all a rifle. I mean, our right is clearly laid out in the 2nd and recently supported by SCOTUS decisions yet there's still been no legislation for "free" rifles. Why is that?
