Attorney appointed for alleged gunman in weekend shooting case

By BRAD KELLAR

GREENVILLE — A Greenville man has had an attorney appointed to represent him, as he faces multiple felony charges in connection with two reported shootings near downtown Saturday evening.

Francisco Javier Davila is also seeking a reduction in his $6.5 million total bond on four counts of attempted capital murder and one count of deadly conduct. Davila, 19, who previously had been identified by the surname of Davila-Rodrigues, was transported to the Hunt County Jail Tuesday from Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where he was recovering from wounds he received in an alleged gun battle with officers from the Greenville Police Department.

During a hearing in the 354th District Court Wednesday, Judge Richard A. Beacom appointed an attorney for Davila. No additional hearings were immediately scheduled.

Davila was arraigned at the hospital Monday on the five charges.

Hunt County Justice of the Peace Aaron Williams set bond at $1.5 million on each of the attempted capital murder counts and $500,000 for the deadly conduct charge.

A representative for Williams told the Herald-Banner the judge set the bond at such a high mark due to the multiple number and severity of the alleged offenses, as well as the fact that Davila, who listed an address in the 2600 block of Sayle Street in Greenville, is in the United States illegally.

It is believed to be the largest total bond ever in Hunt County’s history.

Davila is alleged to have fired on police officers and to have shot and slightly wounded another man Saturday night.

The Greenville Police Department was reported to have received a call of the first shooting, on Texas Street, at approximately 6:10 p.m. Saturday.

A Caddo Mills man was shot as he was driving a vehicle northbound on Texas Street, allegedly by Davila, who was walking southbound on Texas.

The victim drove to an address on Gordon Street where an ambulance responded and transported him to the Hunt Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Police officers responded and located Davila at the intersection of Pickett and Texas Streets, where he was alleged to have fired multiple times on the officers, who returned fire, striking Davila.

No officers were injured.

No motives for the shootings have been made public.

The police department and the Texas Rangers are investigating.

Ummm, if he can afford more than $65,000, or 1% of the listed amount, I'd be asking questions about where he's getting the money from.

I can't believe they hold people who are here illegally, put them through the courts, etc. when it'd be just as easy to tattoo their foreheads "DO NOT ADMIT TO U.S." and ship them back across the border. Stamp 'em and ship 'em and save some money.

Everyone is entitled to a legal defence, regardless of citizenship status. If you can't afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you - it's in the Miranda rights is it not?

Surprise surprise that the defence lawyer would attempt to get the bail lowered. So what?

American citizens and LPRs should NOT be paying for this guy's defense.

Why not? Doesn't taxpayer ALWAYS pay for the defence of people who can't afford a lawyer?

Those people should be citizens & PR's of the US.

I wouldn't want any of my tax dollars used to support an illegal.
