My fiancee gets here on the 30th. We are getting married on the 10th. We aren't sure what to do about applying for her SSN.

I've read somewhere on this site that we should wait 2 weeks once she gets into the country to try to apply for the SSN. Is this true?

I've also read that it's easier to apply with her maiden name first and then change her name. But if we wait two weeks to apply, we'll already be married and technically, her name will have changed. If we are supposed to wait two weeks...should we just apply with her maiden name first and then change it? Or are we safe just applying with her married name?

It'd be nice if we could just apply right after she gets here...

Let me know. Thank you!

In my case i applied for SSN after i got married which is about 3 weeks upon my US entry. I used my new name for the SSN, i brought the marriage certificate and my passport as supporting documents. I got my SSN after a week and was able to use my new name to open a joint and checking account.

It is recommended you wait two weeks so that her entry will be recorded in the computer system that the Social Security Administration uses to check for visas. If it isn't in the system yet, then they'll want to do a manual search, which can add weeks of delay. If that happens, withdraw the application and tell them you'll come back when it's in the system.

People also recommend you apply in the maiden name because that will be the name on her passport, visa, I-94, and in their computer system. If you apply after you're married then be sure to bring your marriage certificate to prove the name change.

Of course, but then this qn would be in the CR1 forum, and not the AOS one :D
