Hello Everyone,

My wife recently entered the US after a lengthy process, as most of us have. However, now I would like to make sure everything is done properly moving forward. Is anyone aware of a guide detailing the next steps that need to be taken. I have a few questions such as:

1. Do I need to go to a court house and apply for a marriage license?

2. Do I file for a green card now or will I receive that automatically, since immigration kept the sealed documents at the POE.

Thanks is advance.

It would be helpful if you could be more specific how your wife now entered the country since your profile doesn't show it?

And if she's your wife already, why would you have to get a marriage license now?

I haven't done it yet as we're a little bit behind you but, CONGRATULATIONS! :)

Our plan after arrival is this -

1)Apply for Marriage Licence

2)Visit local Social Security Office with this info as proof that you can obtain a SSN - I'm going to highlight section C (they are gonna love me! Ha!)

3)Visit the Civil Surgeon we have an appointment with to get my vaccines transcribed onto the I-693 ready for AOS.

Then after we get married -

1)Obtain Certified Copy of Marriage Licence for AOS

2)Send off the completed I-485 (application for adjustment of status), Advance Parole & Employment Authorisation Document.

3)Visit the local Social Security Office again to change my name and present my EAD (when it arrives)

4)Look for work! :)

I think thats right, but anyone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Hope that helps!

Well,I was just thinking of the fact that he said his wife just came over, that would mean they weren't a K1 but something else, which is where I got confused. With the marriage license and all, IDK.

OP-how did your wife enter?

OP's previous topics show s/he is a CR-1/IR-1 so...

** moved from "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" to Moving Here and Your New Life In America as the OP has no need to adjust status from a CR-1/IR-1 visa and this seems a more appropriate location**

OP - Please update your timeline so others can benefit from your experience and your profile to reflect that you applied for a CR-1/IR-1 visa. The timeline function is up the top called "immigration timelines". To update your profile click on your control panel and on the left is the function called "edit profile information". Then scroll down to Immigration status where it is currently blank and change it to "CR-1/IR-1".

To answer your questions:

1. You are married, you do not need a marriage licence in the US.

2. You will receive the greencard automatically. As I am a K1 I don't know specifics. Please read through the forums to find out how long it typically takes. I would assume around 2 weeks.

If you ticked the box on the DS-230(II) to receive a SSN then you should receive that as well. If you do not you are permitted to go to the SSA office (or once you have the greencard you could try going in and applying for one).

Best of luck.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for the replies. Apologize for not clarifying my situation. I got married to my wife in Pakistan last year. I filed for the CR1 visa. She just entered the US last week for the first time. So I was confused about if we needed to file for a marriage license in the US.

So from what I understand, I do not need to apply for a license now.

So do I just apply for a social security card for the wife now.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Karina~ We are in the same situation as you and your husband. My husband arrived here on the 18th of April and we went to the SS office last Friday. They told us there to wait at least a month to see if he is in the system, as of last Friday, he wasn't, then reapply for the SS#. From what I am reading, it is a hit or miss situation whether they actually take the ds-230 as an application for the SS#.

It's frustrating not finding any information for after POE.headbonk.gif

Hi And_Sam, glad to hear from u... I am now 22 days here. I got 2 Welcome letter mails, with my Green Card number, but that is it. My hubby is gonna call tomorrow, I can´t do anything without the SSN, so we will see what they say him tomorrow morning. I hope we to get it very soon. Have a great weekend, enjoying hubby at home.
