Dear all,

My wife,an Indian Resident, just arrived in the end of February 2010. She came over on a Spouse Visa CR1 and received her Permanent Resident Card a weeks after in March. During that time she also received her Social Security Card. The question I have is that on her PR Card she has our married Last Name while the Social Security Card has her Maiden Name. I was curious if I should the SS Card changed to our Married Last name.

2nd question. On her Indian passport she has her maiden name and same on the visa. Should I have this changed as well? If so would she have to go back to India to have her name changed?

3rd question. Our Marriage certificate is from India, as we were wed there. Is it possible to get a marriage certificate done here in America? I am concerned if there is ever a problem with the original certificate, we would have to go back to India to have it reprinted.

4th question. During the process of my wife's immigration we moved into a new place. The original address was my parents address. They are co-sponsors for her visa. Should I contact USCIS for the address? How urgent is it that I have this done.

Best Regards,

Jason

1.) yes i would go to the local Social security office bring the GC and marriage cert

2. am not sure on indias law but as it was in my case ( am german citizen) I had to go to the german consulate and aply for a new passport there ( maybe you can go to the inian consulate )

3. i doubt you can get a marriage cert here since your orig marriage was registerd in india , what i would do is have the cert professionaly translated with a seal and keep both in a safe place make copies for future needs .

4 yes you do have to inform USCIS of your move your wife can file A 11 on line you have to mail the form to USCIS ( cant remember the form now but am sure someone will jump in to help out :) )

Correction, HERE https://egov.uscis.gov/crisgwi/go?action=coa is the change of address link.

The link posted in the PP is simply information, not the actual online change of address page.

1. Yes. Complete SS-5 form and take in your marriage licence to show change of name. Also take her PR card.

2. I know for Australia there is an Embassy here in the US to get a new passport with the new name. You do not HAVE to change her name in her passport however I think it makes life less complicated. The visa is now dead as she has her GC so that is all she needs in terms of proving her status.

3. No. It is not possible. You are already married. The only way would be to divorce and then re-marry in the US. If she still has family in India it is possible if you ever need the licence reprinted that you can request it be mailed to her family in India and they can forward to you. I personally would scan it and save a digital copy somewhere.

4. You have 10 days to report a change of address. The co-sponsors also need to maintain their address. I assume that it has been longer than 10 days since she immigrated (though I haven't checked) so you MUST change the address ASAP now. Here is the online link: https://egov.uscis.gov/crisgwi/go?action=coa It is also recommended that you send the physical form (AR-11). If the co-sponsors move they must file and I-865.
