It happens in the UK too. Had it quite a few times. The funniest one was "I love you, I love your jumper (UK speak for sweater)...you marry me?"

No wonder I'm still single, I'll have to try that line.

If you could just direct me to the aisle where they keep the trophy wives, I'd be ever so grateful.

ScottThuy posted about his experience, although it didn't happen in the US.

I do actually agree with your second statement. (This is where I pass out & die.) It's just so weird. My friends are mostly women, the vast majority of my nursing school is comprised of women...I know a LOT of women and can't imagine even one accepting such an offer as was proposed. It just boggles my mind.

My experence happened in the US... last year...

Okay, this has happened to me TWICE and also to several of my other female-friends.

Foreign person approaches you while you're at on WalMart/a cafe/shopping/etc., makes a bit of small talk before launching into how he wants to date you and you should really marry him. Isn't deterred by the whole "I'm MARRIED!" thing. One friend had a guy that actually tried to kiss her.

The second time this happened to me, I pointed out that the guy should really approach this like a business transaction & state that he needs a GC & is willing to pay the woman money to marry him. A couple thousand, at least. But he didn't speak English very well so I don't think he understood what I was saying.

Has this happened to anyone else? It's so bizarre! Do they really think that basically asking a woman to marry them within two minutes of talking is going to work?

where do live? wow that sounds rediculous

I actually had an offer like this with a twist:

I used to babysit for a single dad, US soldier, Nigerian citizen though but applying for Naturalization. He was stationed in Germany at the time. At some point his brother came to "visit" from Nigeria and not long into the visit they approached me if I was willing to marry him so he could stay in Germany.

They offered me $20,000 and the possibility of a gc once the guy would get a gc through his brother once he became a citizen IF we would still be married by then. Not sure if they had an idea how long that would take, but anyway- I declined their gracious offer anyway.

See, that's the problem with the current US immigration system. Marriage is the one and only path to immigration that works quite well. So the want-to-be Green Card holder pays $5000 up front plus $400 per month for about 3 years (time for AOS to be processed and approved plus 2 years until ROC) to a willing USC, for a total of about $20,000, money that the US government could charge and get.

I personally know of people who went that route, successfully. The ROC process slowed marrying for a Green Card down a lot, but the only way to prevent this from happening would be to open an alternative way for those people to become LPRs, as I suggested by selling Green Cards for $25K to $50K to qualified applicants outright.

On a side note: imagine how much lower the USICS fees could be if USCIS could collect a tens of millions of Dollars in extra money?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
