Imagine you are an Immigration Officer. Good. Now you get a stack of paperwork and your cover letter. Whatcha think?

I tell you what I would like if I were the I.O. I'd like to know who I'm dealing with, in perhaps 1 or 2 sentences. I used this during AOS and during ROC.

For example.

Dear Sir or Madam!

Please find enclosed an I-485 petition for my wife, Jane Doe. A citizen of Thailand, we met at church in April of 2009, dated for 5 months, got engaged in San Francisco in September 2009 and got married in Podunk Holler Nebraska, on January 32, 2010 with all of her friends and family present.

In support of the petition, we've enclosed the following documents:

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915

Thanks for replies.

As just Bob said, I'm thinking about adding a little of info about us, then it'll be 2 pages.

Is the cover letter ok to be 2 pages?

I didn't worry about a cover letter for mine. I wrote one up, but figured it's not going to do anything for the immigration officer. I just put my I-485 packet in an A4 envelope and labelled it, then put the I-130 packet in an envelope, labelled it, and then put both those envelopes inside the UPS envelope. I'm sure they know what to do with it.

This brought me a doubt...

G-325A is for the Beneficiary AND the Petitioner? I thought it was just for beneficiary.

G-325A is for the Beneficiary AND the Petitioner? I thought it was just for beneficiary.

I don't think there's any doubt there.

My spouse was on a K-1 so I didn't fill in the G-325A for myself in the AOS,

as the I-130 form was not necessary.

The OP, however, has to fill the I-130 and in the checklist at the BOTTOM

of the instructions for that form, if filing for husband/wife, the G-325A

is required for BOTH parties when filing the I-130.good.gif

Great examples of cover letters, guys. Hope to see a couple more.

I think a cover letter with inventory list is good, 'cause it helps you organize and check items off.

I think the Officer/employee appreciates a list as well.

I think people are way too obsessed about the CV. It does not need to be fancy. All you need to do is write down the list of documents you are sending separated by form titles and put the documents in that order. No need to make it 2 pages with anything extra written on it.

AOS Timeline from F1

Sent AOS on April 17

Received and signed on April 19

Got 3 NOAs April 26

Good point!

That's why I posted what I used, which is totally copy/past from my friend's lawyer's template.

I hope new filers find this so they won't think too much about it and waste their time...

It is pretty much the same as the sample here on VJ. I think many of us have used that template. A list of the documents submitted will be ok, no need to write anything else.
