Hey all,

I'm not quite sure if I'm posting this in the right spot. My EAD came today in the mail!!! I was wondering if I should be applying for an SSC or DL first? If anyone would like to share their experiences, I would greatly appreciate it.

Your SSN is probably the first step as you cannot work without it.

As for DL, you will need to check your state requirements. Some states require a GC first.

**edit - okay I found this for you: http://www.k-state.edu/isss/resourceslinks...r%20License.pdf

I would get the SSN first and then the DL, but that's me :D

Applying for a Social Security number would be my first suggestion. Then go get a learner's permit or driver's license. The choice is really up to you and your needs.

Not according to the link I posted.

Iowa is where I'll be getting mine and I need to have my greencard, EAD isn't good enough (according to online rules and reg's).. unlike the OP's state of Kansas that is okay with EAD's..

Thank ya'll for your help! I'm currently in Kansas, and they do allow people going through the AOS process with an approved EAD to go for their DL. I think it is because alot of jobs (from what I have been seeing) require employees to have a valid Kansas DL in order to work. I just couldn't find if I needed to get a SSN first. That's why I was trying to find out who has applied for what, when and the order, and if anyone had a similar experience. I just needed some help to make a decision :)

More and more states are matching Social Security Numbers to names before they issue driver's licenses. This is to comply with the federal REAL ID Act.

In California, I had to go to the Social Security office and change my name there and wait a day before I could change my name with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

I got a Massachusetts drivers license after I-94 expired, and less than a week after I sent AOS. My Social Security Card had my married name. I had the driver license record from my home province. I brought the marriage certificate and I did not have NOA1 from AOS. I do not have EAD.

Which is to say, have patience with bureaucracy, know their own ID requirement documentation inside and out, and expect to hit your head on some bureaucratic roadblock. But you might as well try if you have the time, especially if it's a simple license conversion that requires nothing more than an eye test and documentation.

It looks like SSA and driver/motor vehicle organizations are pathetically bad with our cases, based on the reams of topics about it.

Social security first. In maiden name. Change to married name, then go deal with the drivers license.

Yes. Everything MUST match. So make sure social security have the correct information on record.

I had a GC in my married name, a SC in my married name and the prerequisite 2 pieces of mail in my married name....but was denied my DL because USCIS had screwed up and left my maiden name on the INS database that the DMV are now using to verify immigrant information before issuing cards.

Thank ya'll for your help, and getting back to me regarding this topic. I have decided to go for my SSN first then my DL. andana_dj Im not sure how it will work, or if it will be temporary. I just checked with the Kansas DMV and they allow people with their EAD apply. So that's what Im going to do. I will let you know the outcome when I get there :)

My applications with the USCIS are in my maiden name, but I would like the SSN and DL to have my husbands last name (I did not change my name to my husbands when I got married because I thought that it would mess around with my AOS applications). However, I would like my SSN and DL to be the same as my husbands last name...at the very least...hyphenated with my maiden name. If I can't, I will apply for to change in the future. Just asking because Im curious. Anyone have a similar situation?

You will need to change your greencard if you do this as your "ID" will not match the EAD/GC. They will not issue you a drivers licence in a name that doesn't match your EAD.

In order to change your greencard you will need to pay just under $300 and file the I-90 here: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/men...00045f3d6a1RCRD
