I am going to recommend you see a doctor. This symtom could be something more or less benign, like carpal tunnel syndrome, or could be something more serious and should rule out more serious.

I was recently having some "heavy feeling" in my legs and BACK pain. I finally got around to going to the doctor after 3 weeks of this and found out I had had a serious (not to use the word "massive") heart attack and ended up having quadruple bypass surgey post haste and the doctors still don't know how I was walking around for three weeks without treatment (and never had classic heart attack symptoms) Get yourself checked out, OK? No more messing around for me and I urge anyone to see a doctor regularly, which I was not.

OP: it was happening to me from time to time too awhile back. this older guy i work with told me 'you're pinching a nerve in your neck while you sleep dumbass. change pillows, rearrange them, or use a samller on'. i use to sleep w/ two big pillows stacked onto of each other. now i only use one....no numbness, no feeling like the bones in my arms & hands were on fire, & no pain anymore at all....3 months now.

of course i didn't tell the cranky old b@stard at work it seems to have worked & i think he was right. :)

Hand/hands wakes me up with numbness and pain on a 7 level. Beat, shake, spin for 20+ minutes. Not much relief. Took some codeine at 3 AM and seemed to help a little. Finally got a couple hours sleep. Stacked pillows worked for awhile a couple months ago. Not any more tho.

Been to neurologist and my doctor. They are calling carpel tunnel. Worked BIGtime driving my bulldozer. LOTS of numbness operating the levers.

Got some Prednisone 10 mg from my doctor today. I'll give it a try tonight. Going to get a appointment for the shock test ASAP. Not easy where I live as we have to fly to another island to get test. Almost 2 hundred round trip.

Is that the EMG you mean? (sorry, I didn't read the entire thread if you already mentioned that)

It's quite uncomfortable, but should give you some answers. Good luck!

that's so weird... i just started having the same problem a week or so ago... mine is in my thumb and i wake up with my thumb-wrist area popping. Is that carpal tunnel? maybe i just sprained it? hurts like a mother though...

It could be anything from your neck down to hand to a sprain, tendinitis, bursitis, impingement, etc... . Go to a MD it is the only way to know for sure.

Took prednisone last night and instead of being woken up 10 times with aching numb hands it only happen at daylight.

Prednisone works but is only a temporary solution as it's hard on the liver.

I'll get the EMG as soon as I can get to Oahu.

i had the same thing when i went back to work after 10 months of being off. it took me about a half hour of shaking and moving my hand to wake it up but the tip of my thumb was always numb. i thought it might be carpel tunnel also but it seams to have gone away on its own. i still do wake up numb but its easier to wake up now.

Cortisone shots and splints worked for me. Has your doctor tried the shots yet?

Prednisone [steroid also] pills seem to work OK but only can be used a limited time as I have a "fatty liver".
