He should have saved the boy.

We weren't there to know what conditions the man faced, so it's unfair to say how he should have handled the situation. I'm sure he didn't make the decision lightly.

I'm not 'judging' the man. Just saying how I feel as a Mother.

I know you aren't... but I also know some will :hehe:

I think the point was that he couldn't save the boy and he knew he couldn't and had to rescue the wife or she would have drowned as well.

I do understand how RJo feels of course, every mum would be devastated to lose one of their children.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

The thread title is wrong really, he didn't 'decide' to save the wife rather than the son rather he saved his wife because he could save her, and he couldn't save the son. At least that is my interpretation.

Won't even ask why that car was driven into a river.

He should have saved the boy.

not if he didn't think he could.

the movie i, robot addressed this dilemma well.

Haven't seen it.

I just know that I'd want someone to save Zachary over me. I think most moms would feel the same.

Having been a lifeguard for 8 years, you are told to save those that you can first, it is better to save one and one die than 3 people die attempting the impossible.

best answer

i would never want to be in that situation this guy was in.

I've also done years of time in the big chair and as capt for a group of guards ...

nicely said

He should have saved the boy.

From my understanding, the waters were so murky even rescue crews couldn't retrieve him. From what little I've read, I think he did the best he could in the situation. Hope to never be in that situation.

This guy is a hero!

Seriously, rescuing someone from a submerged vehicle is a very dangerous task. Though he couldn't get the son, I hope the family can move on. Sad that in situations such as this there's so much grief over losing one family member, it's almost taken for granted that another is still alive. And worse still, often the survivors commit suicide over the grief of being "spared." As RJO's pointed out, what a horrible feeling for parents.

But, it sounds like they're religious people so hopefully their faith can guide them through. Way back when, parents often buried several of their children, but they kept going. Love for family can transcend even death. What a horrible situation, but yet, still, what precious gifts.

 Well said.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

If he let the car fill up with water so the pressure inside and outside would equalize, he would've been able to open the door without any problems. Two lives would've been saved.

Right! Exactly! what WAS this guy thinking anyway?
