Baltimore police call beating of 76-year-old man a hate crime

A 76-year-old man was in serious condition after he was beaten while fishing with his wife in what police are treating as a hate crime. Police said a 28-year-old suspect, who has a tattoo of Adolf Hitler on his stomach and professed to be a white supremacist, was taken into custody.

The victim, who was not identified, was at Fort Armistead Park in South Baltimore about 3:30 a.m. when three to four men began assaulting him while yelling racial epithets, according to charging documents. At least one of the attackers struck the man with a baseball bat, and the group fled in the victim's vehicle after taking his wallet.

He was taken to Harbor Hospital, then transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center because of the severity of the injuries to his head. Charging documents show he had a possible fractured eye socket and two bottom teeth knocked out. The man was reported in serious but stable condition as of late Tuesday, police said. His wife was uninjured.

Police arrested Calvin E. Lockner, a convicted sex offender, after officers tracked down the victim's 2008 Chevy Tahoe using an anti-theft device, according to Anthony Guglielmi, the department's chief spokesman. The suspects fled from police, crashing and overturning the vehicle in the 5100 block of Erdman Ave. Lockner was located a short time later.

Lockner, of the 3700 block of Pascal Ave., told officers that he was a member of the Aryan Brotherhood and the Nordic Brotherhood and "did not like people who were different from him," Guglielmi said. Officers wrote in charging documents that he has a tattoo on his stomach of Hitler, and written underneath it are the words "He Lives."

Lockner told Sgt. Kathleen Jackson that the beating "wouldn't have happened if [the victim] was a white man," documents show. He is also quoted as apologizing for the incident, saying, "I'm sorry I did it."

Police were searching for at least two additional suspects.

Lockner, who in 2000 was indicted on first-degree murder charges, has a previous history of race-related violence. In May 2009, his wife told police that Lockner bit her in the face after a "verbal argument over 'black people,'" according to charging documents. Police found Lockner hiding in a basement stairwell.

"When asked why he was hiding, he stated 'I'm scared of police. I'm a convicted felon,'" police wrote in charging documents.

Charges in that case were dropped by prosecutors; Joseph Svitako, a spokesman for Baltimore State's Attorney Patricia A. Jessamy, said that Lockner's wife invoked spousal privilege not to testify against him.

Mayor Sheila Dixon, who in a statement decried the "senseless" and "disturbing" incident, said she and Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III visited the victim at the hospital. She said the attack should serve as a wake-up call to promote diversity and tolerance.

"Commissioner Bealefeld and I promised to do everything in our power to bring the other assailants to justice," Dixon said. "Any form of violence, whether it is racially motivated or not, has no place in our society."

Lockner was indicted in Baltimore Circuit Court in March 2000 on charges of first-degree murder, rape, kidnapping and sex offenses. The more serious charges were dropped and he pleaded guilty to a second-degree sex offense, receiving 20 years in prison with all but eight years suspended. In March 2007, he was sentenced to two years in prison for violating his probation.

Baltimore police reported eight bias incidents to the FBI in 2007, three of which were said to have been motivated by race.

At a press conference, Marvin L. "Doc" Cheatham, president of the Baltimore chapter of the NAACP, said Baltimore "has a great deal to do to deal with violence, whether it's black- on-black or hate crimes."

Why do people have to be violent? This was extremely unnecessary by all means.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

I mean, think violent things all you want, but acting them out is another story. I don't know what drives some people. Maybe the devil, who knows?

I hear you. We are one.

Wish I understood that myself...seems that's all you read in the news anymore. In ATL for instance...a woman was shot and her 1 yr old was beaten in a home invasion.:angry::angry: Thank the gods they found those pieces of pond scum and well, they are going to the Hotel Pen.

I mean, who beats a 1 yr old in a home invasion? Dmnd sorry pieces of merde de cheval!

A hanging crime.....Where's the rope?

While I am for the Death penalty and even expanding it to certain crimes, such as extreme cases of child rape, I am not gonna vote for the death penalty for assault ...... but on the other hand.

If someone takes acts with the purpose to kill and causes serious bodily harm, (despite failing to kill),... I might see the logic in that being a "hangin offense".

... and I do have some rope.

i'd like to think a 76 year old can enjoy his "golden years" fishing without the threat of assault.

i've got about 200' of half inch nylon. which tree do you think is suitable, william? the black walnut?
