Will the opposition to this be greater than for his health-control reform?

Obama Vows to Focus on Borders

But Immigration Action Won't Come Until 2010

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, Aug. 10 -- President Obama, attending a North American summit with the leaders of Mexico and Canada, said Monday that his administration will pursue a comprehensive overhaul of the U.S. immigration system this year but that no action on legislation will happen before 2010.

Wrapping up the two-day meeting, Obama said that there needs to be "a pathway to citizenship" for millions of illegal immigrants in the United States, and that the system must be reworked to avoid tensions with Mexico. Without it, he said, Mexicans will keep crossing the border in dangerous ways and employers will continue exploiting workers.

"We can create a system in which you have . . . an orderly process for people to come in, but we're also giving an opportunity for those who are already in the United States to be able to achieve a pathway to citizenship so that they don't have to live in the shadows," Obama said during an hour-long news conference at the Cabañas Cultural Center in downtown Guadalajara. "Am I going to be able to snap my fingers and get this done? No. This is going to be difficult."

The president said he expects draft legislation and sponsors by the end of the year, but no action until 2010 because of more pressing issues, including health-care reform, energy legislation and financial regulatory changes.

"That's a pretty big stack of bills," he said.

Immigration is among the most controversial items on Obama's legislative agenda, with critics opposing what they call an amnesty for illegal workers and businesses concerned about reductions in their labor force. President George W. Bush twice attempted immigration reform during his second term, without success.

Asked about the prospects for immigration legislation in view of the blows to his administration over health care and midterm elections next year, Obama dismissed the idea that the elections would play a role, saying he would not act "on short-term political calculations."

Flanked by Mexican President Felipe Calderón and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Obama also pledged to work with Mexico and Canada on controlling emissions that contribute to global warming and on ensuring that Mexico receives aid for its battle with drug traffickers. ...............snip

I wonder if I can become illegal so I can get all the benefits that my tax dollars give to illegals?

Now don't go thinkin like that... lots of people are depending on your contributions... some that have not yet arrived.

Pretty sure Obama indicated this was on his agenda when he ran. Also positive the current system is not working, can't ignore them, can't deport them all in any reasonable manner, and many come back after deportation. Building a wall and/or shooting on sight are hardly rational options, and won't work regardless.

Might be unfair, I know the thousands we have spent, the tons of waiting times to get the K-1 and all the way to now with conditions removed, seems quite unfair.

But, the system as it exists isn't working. The problem is decades old, and nobody else has tackled it. And again, Obama indicated he was planning what is indicated in this OP during his campaign. Getting our fee's back would be a nice nod to those of us who did the legal thing.

I personally would be more comfortable with Canadians and Mexicans and others further south of the border having the legal ability to come and go, short of granting citizenship as a bonus for being here illegally. But that is just me I guess...

So to put this into a smaller simile: because there's dozens of people here in town that come from the town across the county line, and they go stealing their daily supply of comestibles at the local grocery store, and more from that family arriving daily, there should be a way of making them all managers in said store; just because there are so many of them, and they did steal at that store for such a long time, they have somehow earned the right to have the keys to the front door?

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

This system does work but you guys don't enforce the laws. You allow illegals to roam freely and they say oh well it's broken.

Okay lets give them amnesty. Then what? Is the US just going to play the same game in the next 10 years and then too claim oh well the system is broken. Illegal immigration affects the quality of living of all Americans, including that of immigrants. That is reality. American is not a country with a bottomless pit of money. It also has a big problem with poverty. Allowing anyone and everyone to live here is not being compassionate. Low skilled labor needs to be trickled in so that it gives them a chance to actually improve there life. They cannot compete with millions coming in at once. It is also a huge security risk because you don't know who the hell is in your country. Illegal immigrants certainly have more than there fair share of representation in crime stats.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
