It's probably comparable to when somebody asks me if I know Mickey Mouse when I tell them where I live. Now that really gets on my nerves because Mickey and I had a falling out several years ago and we haven't spoken to each other since.

Wait. what?

:P

She just has to look at them to figure out if they are hot.

Ireland has given us some fine hot men - Cillian Murphy, Colin Farrell, Daniel Day Lewis, the cute one from westlife who's not the fat lead singer

I have to chime in even though my husband is German (and for the record, German guys are hot too)...

I love Ireland. And Irish people. I did a summer study in Ireland in college, and my MA thesis was on James Joyce and the Irish renaissance. I have never in my life felt more welcomed or at home in a country than I did in Ireland. I'm taking a group of students there next summer and I cannot wait!

I also love Irish music. The traditional stuff has so much in common with Louisiana zydeco in many ways. But I also love other Irish bands like the Chieftains, Pogues, U2 (of course), etc.

Ok, sorry to hijack, back to your thread :)

####### in one hand and a beer in the other, and dont smack on the mother church !!

............and another misconception............

Dam you "real" Irish people are snobs, I didnt know us fakes got under your skin. Im a mutt and a American first with no want or need to brag about the little Irish I have in me. I have always liked Irish/American music.

No snobs here! It's all in good fun......

I know for the most part its all in good fun but it seems that people here are annoyed with these people "wannabees". I would be happy to have somebody this intrested and whatnot if it were me, I would spend alot of time and whatnot telling them about my homeland ect but unfourtantly it isnt cool to be American in todays world, sigh someday.

Ok. Seems I need to clarify.

It can be fun and interesting for my husband to talk to Americans of Irish descent about his country. In fact it's nice to do that with any American. It has always seemed odd to us, though, that some (not all) of those with Irish ancestry aren't really interested in doing that. Perhaps it is as you mentioned - it's 'cool' to be Irish. Most cannot even tell you the County their ancestors came from. Those folks might want to hear the kind of beer he prefers or ask if he speaks Gaelic. They have opinions on religion and conflict, but they get squirmy if he talks about living with soldiers patrolling streets; navigating through a crowd on hunger strike protesters just to get to school; or having a little prayer in third grade in memory of your classmate who was blown to bits last week.

It just seems silly to me to claim you are "Irish" or "English" or "German" or whatever the case may be if you weren't born in raised in that country. Not everything in my husband's upbringing was a terror - not by any means. The point is you are native to the land you are raised in and nothing more.

I can understand that, it would be annoying if only they were intrested in the "cool" sterotypes and had no intrest in learning more about his culture
