Hi!

I see often that a good proof of a bona fide marriage is to have a joint bank account. However, we asked for that and they said i couldn't open one as i dont have any SSN. So i wonder how everyone had a joint account?

We still have the lease and Im in her phone family plan. Is that enough?

Thanks

many different ways to show a "comingling" of lives... joint bank accounts is but only one. For what reason are you needing this type of information? I-485? I-130? Else?

Although it is a strong piece of evidence - and you should try again to obtain one - it is not required.

We had no problems getting a joint account (Bank of America, in Texas) - although banking requirements vary by state.

You've also been unsuccessful in obtaining a social security card?

I guess i can't have one before applying for the AOS and work permit..?

If you are submitting only the I-485, then proof of relationship evidence (other than a marriage certificate) is not required. If/when you are interviewed then this information is shown at that time. You do not need SSN to send in the forms.

YMMV

No - you can apply for one before AOS/EAD/AP. (depending on status :))

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Maybe... depends on individual facts and circumstances like current immigration status....

You don't say what visa you have.

My wife applied for her SSN the day after she arrived, (the office was closed for the day when she arrived, that is why it took so long) had her card in 6 days. Prior to her getting her card we called the SS office and got her SSN by phone (the card itself is a rather useless document, I lost mine in the early 1970s and never replaced and never needed it) We added her to our account 4 days after she arrived. She only needed the number to be added to the account, not the card.

Some people seem to think the SSN is no big deal, because it is not needed for the AOS, but lots of other things dependent on it...are. In addition to the bank account you need it to add someone to utility accounts, credit cards, even to get a cell phone. All of these things will be useful for the AOS. I always suggest getting the SSN before you unpack your suitcase.

This is true, and I did not mean to imply a joint account is needed to file the AOS if I said anything that confused. These things are needed (maybe) for the interview, lots of things can be used. I even brought letters addressed to both of us by our son's school. It is something you can work on while you wait for your interview.

Well i didn't know it was possible to apply for a SSN before an AOS. Anyway it's too late now cause I'm out of status...

How does it work after? Once you receive your work permit you have to apply? or you have one automatically? or you can ask one before having the pemit?

thanks :)

Once you get your EAD you can apply for a SS# and card.

We did not have any joint bank accounts, and we had no trouble at our AOS interview. My bank wouldn't even allow me to add my husband until he had a valid driver's license. :P

There are many other ways to prove that you live together, and that your marriage is real. Think about what makes your marriage unique, and bring evidence of such. Photos worked well for us. :) Remember, roommates live together in the same house, but marriage is about much more than that. Good luck!

If I were you, I would change the bank. Bank of America certainly opens accounts without SSN. At least in Chicago they do. I had a bank account WAY before having a SSN.

I bet BofA is not the only bank that does it. It might not work at all branches either, but it is worth trying. And by the way, we only had printed 1 month of statements on savings and checking accounts, the officer barely looked at those papers. He had a "let's save the trees" attitude about the whole file.

I am surprised by the number of times I see people having trouble getting a SSN.

That was, by far, the easiest thing Svetlana was able to acquire.

Walked into local SSN office. Waited about 10 minutes. Sat down with a SS worker. He asked questions and filled out a form as she answered the questions. The she signed the form. SS card and number arrived a few days later.
