Hi All,

I am just trying to confirm a few facts. I am from INdia and right now donbe my biometrics and waiting from rest. I am adjusting from B1/B2 based on marriage to my wife. Now as far as i know i have to Licen wait for my EAD card, with the EAD card i can apply for my SSN and Driving License. I am at Ohio.

I have few queries :

a) How much approx do driving schools cost and how long do the take in average ?

B) Do the driving schools give admission based on my initial NOAs ? or wd they also look for EAD or SSN. I was planning to get to a driving schools now and may be take the tests as I get my SSN

c) Dnnt they even issue a learners permit without a SSN. I cd have driven & practised with my wife in parks if I had a learners permit.

All help wd be appreciated.

If you are here in AZ, i have the answers to all your questions.

Since procedures varies per state, I would suggest that you review your state driving requirements. On the driving school rate, you could search online too. :)

In general. If you have driven in India... YOU DO NOT NEED A DRIVING SCHOOL. Just pay attention to how people drive here. My wife came here and passed her driving test immediately.

Hey Christera22: Found you here.......:)

Well, i think a driving school depending on its reputation will charge you from around $180 to 240 for the full package. That includes, driving, providing a car for the practical test, and issuing you a Pre-licensing course. Now heres how you should do it...

1 Get your DMV regulations Booklet and start going through it for the Test.

2 Get youe EAD.

3 Get your SSN Card.

4 Apply for the Learner's permit....... I would suggest join the school if you have not driven before, otherwise your wife can make you practice if she is able to.

5 Apply for a Road test. Depends on how much you have practised and how confident you are. You have one year on your learner's Permit to apply for a road test.

The School probably would like for you to get a learner's permit and since they need your permits 9 digit Client ID to be able to issue a Pre-licensing course, its best you go step by step.

Hope that helped.

Regards.

PS( What I have stated is how its done in NY and surely in many States. Your State might have relaxed rules)

I also agree that a driving school course may not be essential unless your state requires it. Find out the requirements for adult learner drivers from your DMV because they may be less stringent than the rules for teenage learners. The state driver's manual may not make the differences completely clear (GA's certainly doesn't) because the vast majority of learners are ages 15-18. For example, teenage learners in GA must attend Driver's Ed classes but there's no such requirement for adult learners.

Learning to drive here really isn't that hard so long as you take your time and don't rush into anything you're not comfortable with. I'm well on my way, having never driven in my home country and only starting here about 2 months ago. If your spouse is a competent driver and willing to give you guidance then really, no driving school should be necessary.

First off, read your state's driver's manual a couple of times to get a grip on the rules and regs. Then when you're ready, spend as long as you need doing 10mph round and round a church parking lot because they tend to be pretty empty 6 days out of 7. That way, you can get used to how the car handles, how sharp the brakes are, etc, in peace and quiet. Next graduate to quiet rural roads in the middle of nowhere, where you can get used to real roads without being disturbed by other drivers. When you're comfortable with that, slowly but surely move to busier and faster roads as and when you're ready. You'll find it becomes second nature really quite quickly :)

Don't bother with a driving school, just get your instruction permit and have your wife teach you.
