Giana

The hole made by the bullet that hit the wall in Giana's room

Two days after a stray bullet pierced the side of their Oriole Road home — entering the master bedroom and continuing into Giana's room, where the projectile finally landed near her crib — the DeCampos family was still reeling yesterday at the thought that a hunter standing a half mile away could errantly shoot into their home and, in the process, shatter their sense of security.

...

According to township police, the bullet was shot from an adjacent farm, where two hunters who are considered possible suspects were found. Local authorities turned the investigation over to the state Division of Fish & Wildlife's bureau of law enforcement, which was continuing to probe the incident yesterday, spokeswoman Darlene Yuhas said.

Yuhas, citing the active investigation, said she could not provide details. Township police said criminal complaints may be filed.

Mrs. DeCampos said she was wakened by Giana before 7 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, and went downstairs with her youngest daughter to watch cartoons. Shortly after 7, Mrs. DeCampos said she heard a noise upstairs that resembled a boom. She recalled thinking it could be a box falling out of a closet.

About an hour later, she went upstairs with Giana to dress her when she saw pieces of lavender sheet rock on the floor, a piece of copper and a nearly two-inch exit hole above the princess table.

At first, Mrs. DeCampos thought a pipe had burst or that Giana was peeling away at an existing hole. But after rousing her husband — who got home late the night before and happened to be sleeping in a spare bedroom on the other side of the house — the family decided it was a bullet and that they needed to call police.

...

Mrs. DeCampos said she'll fight to have the hunters stop shooting around her house, which sits on a quiet cul-de-sac.

Thank you for gun control. It has done a very nice job, even if the gun is a few blocks away. Not bad. It's just a mere miss.

This could have been avoided if Giana was armed. Then the hunters wouldn't have shot their house up because they'd worry about the little girl shooting back.

Someone should buy the DeCampos family a complimentary subscription to NRA literature and sue the parents for negligence. They are the reason little Giana wasn't armed to the teeth! As any good gun freak will tell you, guns only pose problems when people don't have them.

Indeed, I say arm her with a crossbow as well. Not only will little Giana be protected, but with a gun and a crossbow she has options.

in the meantime, all of you are overlooking the rule that the shooter did too - know thy backstop.

What a silly family. If they had read the NRA education material,

they would've known how to recognize a bullet hole without police intervention,

and they would've known how to properly construct their child's room as a backstop for hunters.

Where would we be without NRA education?

recognizing a bullet hole isn't rocket science, nor is there a need to contruct a room as a backstop.

that bullet hole is about a .30 caliber. this is what happens when idiots don't know how far a bullet can travel. even the lowly .22 has a range of a mile.

my opinion - there shouldn't be any hunting that close to a residential area anyways.

why was the shooter hunting so close to residential area i wonder

they are stupid and don't know the capabilities of their rifles.

Actually Charles, I was being sarcastic.

As you indicated, even a lowly .22 has a range of about a mile and a half.

I'm really hoping that there isn't a legal hunting ground within several miles of a residential area.

You guessed the round to be a .30 cal, of which variants are a common choice for snipers.

Competition with .30 cal is typically at the 1000yd (just over half a mile) range,

with ballistic capacity well in excess of that.

Any developer or township that would allow a shooting ground without a proper buffer area

is as much to blame, if not more than the hunters.

This incident was not caused by a gun or by a bullet.

Statistics have shown that 100% of the time, when a loaded gun is left alone, it will not fire.

The problem exists either with stupid zoning or just stupid gun owners.

More or less firearm legislation will not change stupidity....100% of the time.

one problem i have with the story is the claim that it left a 2 inch bullet hole in the wall. it's clearly not a 2 inch hole, it's about half an inch wide.

and i still place the blame on the hunters for being ignorant of the capabilities of their rifle.

The guy reading the ruler probably thinks he has a 12"....

Compared to the toddler, it does look huge (the hole).

Not enough information to place blame on the hunters.

If they were in a sanctioned hunting area, then the majority of the blame should rest with who allowed a residential community without a proper buffer zone.

If they were plinking behind the farm, then yeah...they're fcuking idiots that should have their @sses handed to them.
