My high school English teacher did this back in the dark ages - although he showed films with a similar "theme" to the book or exploring similar issue, though not necessarily based on the book.

So we did:

Intruder in the Dust - In the Heat of the Night (this is a great double bill, btw)

Farenheit 451 - Rollerball

I'll try and remember the others

In no particular order:

  • To Kill A Mockingbird (already mentioned above) (German title was 'Wer die Nachtigall stört')
  • Firestarter (Stephen King)
  • Girl with a Pearl Earring
  • Memoirs of a Geisha
  • A Clockwork Orange
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
  • Bladerunner
  • A Room With a View

I think the movie of "Memoirs of a Geisha" was horrible, it didn't do it justice at all. The book was amazing though.

Another one I thought of is 1948. Great book, the movie was just aight.

Ah, these are some fabulous suggestions, y'all! THANK YOU!

Some of the books are taught in other levels (Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, Into the Wild, most of the Austen novels, for example) though. But you have given me some great ideas to think of. I'm proposing the class next month and if it's approved then I have until June to finalize the syllabus and the details.

[*]Shawshank Redemption

[*]The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Both great ideas!

[*]Count of Monte Christo (1975 film with Rich Chamberlain, Kate Nelligan, Tony Curtis, Trevor Howard)

[*]Man in Iron Mask (1977 with Rich Chamberlain, Jenny Agutter, Patrick "Prisoner" McGoohan, Ralph Richardson)

We also have the Monte Christo film with Jim Caviezel. He graduated from our school and brought the movie to show us before the final edit was finished and the kids got to see it. But that was probably 6 years ago so none of the current kids remember. The book may be too difficult for some of them, however.

Thank you everyone. Keep the ideas coming.

Ian McEwan's "Atonement." The book is surprising me in how beautiful it really is.

And I have to agree that "Memoirs of a Geisha" in book form was a million times better than the movie. That book is so exquisitely written.

Nicholas Sparks's "The Notebook" and "A Walk to Remember."

A Walk to Remember would be good. The book was far better than the movie though. The boys will hate it!
