I am sure I have adequate assets for bringing my fiance to the U.S., but I haven't found any clear information about how much is required. Is it 125% of the poverty line per person for how many years? Or is it something different?

Assets replace $1 of income at a rate (it appears) somewhere between 3-5X. So, if the 125% line was $20,000 then expect the asset requirement to be somewhere between $60 to $100K. Since the I-134 is adjudicaed at the consulate, there simply is no consistency with the rate....

YMMV

If your current and average income (verifiable by tax returns) meets the 125% poverty guideline,

there is no need to present assets.

As others have noted, guidelines are published in I-864P which is readily found via Google.

The asset requirement is zero. The income requirement, as a practical matter is 125% of poverty level for the applicable household size. For fiance or spouse, $3 in liquide assets can replace $1 in income shortfall, if needed.

Thank you for your replies. I do not make enough money to exceed 125% of the poverty line, but I DO have enough assets to exceed 5 years (per person @ 125%). My actual income is quite low, do I still need to a co-sponser despite my assets?

Probably not, provided you can document the assets.

It depends slightly on the consulate (some don't seem to like a mostly asset based petition), but yes, you can use assets and technically they have to allow you, as per the directions on the I-864. We did my IR-1 on assets only as my husband hasn't worked in the last 3 years and instead lived with me here in Ireland. We had a mortgage free house in joint names, valued in 2007, and a US bank account with some cash in the USC's name only, and that was accepted no problem.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.
