Its valerian root btw - wouldn't want you getting the wrong stuff - you might also benefit from St John's Wort but that one you must take great not to mix with prescription meds!

Also you might want to seriously think about taking Yoga - a proper class - because they teach excellent breathing techniques which can lessen panic breathing. With yoga you are taught to breathe into your stomach, and also your throat, and not your upper chest, and its much harder to get anxiety breathing if you are not using your upper chest.

Did you try the paper bag trick? (breathe into a paper bag as soon as axiety hits and you begin to pant) Because that will definitely slow over breathing as well, cos you are breathing your own CO2 back into your body, making it impossible to pant.

JB great post. I highly recommend the Valarian root for sleeping. It works without leaving you doped feeling in the morning. I know St John's Wort does work in some cases too. Maybe you can try these as long as your not on any other medications. Good luck and hope you get to feeling better soon.

Everything I respond to is from personal knowledge, research or experience and I am in no means a lawyer or do I claim to be one. Everyone should read, research and be responsible for your own journey.

Thanks everyone.

It's just getting so hard you know? I have been on medication before (Effexors) and they helped, but I really dont want to have to rely on them for the rest of my life to be happy. It kinda feels like fake happiness and not resolving my problems. I've also had a bad past with psychiatrists that kinda makes me hesitant on going back to them, they didnt seem to help at all. I may try to look into it again because i cannot handle living like this. I havent had a life in weeks and I know its breaking my husband's heart, i cant imagine how he feels seeing me going through this. Like you yassmine, life could be great, everything my way, one minute i am laughing and then all of a sudden WHAM i'm freaking out and it brings me down again. A friend of mine suggested Varedian Root, an herb that you take that is suppose to calm anxiety and help you sleep better. I think I may try it.

I can understand not wanting to rely on medication, it can feel suffocating. I used to be on a great deal more medication (for bipolar and manic depressive disorder), but over time Ive whittled it down to one tiny little pill. You may find that taking a medication for a few months relieves your symptoms and you can eventually wean yourself off (with doctor supervison, I would imagine). It is not always necessary to visit a psychiatrist for such a medication. Ive gotten my more recent scripts from my regular physican and from my OB/GYN. If you are uncomfortable seeing a psychiatrist, go to your regular doctor and tell him/her how you have been feeling and that your mental and emotional state is having physical side effects. Im sure they will be able to help you in some manner.

Best of Luck hon (F)

jaylen offered up the best piece of advice in regards to natural herbs and prescribed medication .... never mix the 2!!! melatonin is sold over the counter and is a great sleeping aid since your body already produces it. i would recommend that for your insomnia.

what is it that YOU want to do to get rid of these attacks, stina because they are not going to disappear by themself. yoga, meditation, psychiatric therapy w/ or w/out medication and/or herbal supplements are all options that you should seriously consider and look into. if you leave your panic attacks untreated ... they may get worse. :( actively seek out a professional that can provide you with a treatment plan for your disorder ... those who seek early active treatment have a better chance of the symptoms disappearing with no negative effect!!

this is not something you need to suffer from, hun! are you covered under your husband's insurance yet? let me know if you need help finding someone in your area.

If you are not comfortable with the medical care you are receiving from any doctor, find another. It sounds like you have a negative past experience with psychiatrist but sometimes it just takes finding the right one. I went to 4 different ones before I found the right one .. strange thing is .. I went there thinking she would help me with the solutions to my problems .. as in give me the answers .. she never did .. but she did teach me how to deal with things and to feel comfortable with my own decisions .. after that my panic attacks subsided.

One other bit of advice is always make sure you understand any medication you take, whether OTC or prescribed. Know what interactions and side-effects there are. Not saying that anyone would steer you wrong intentionally, but no one else knows you like you do. (Plus a girl at work was rushed to the hospital the other day because she took an herbal med and it turned out it had some sort of shellfish in it .. she was allergic)

Stina,

So sorry to hear this, I went through the same late last year and then I discovered they were caused by gastro-intestinal Candida, just before I went insane!

Candida is not just the kind women get down below, it is a very common nasty illness affecting millions of men and women without them realising it. It has many different symptoms but two of the main ones are anxiety and panic attacks. Others include blurry vision, sickness, diarrhoa, restless legs, itching all over, too hot/cold, depression, paranoia, yeast infections, athletes foot, new food sensitivities/allergies, liver probs, memory loss, lightheadedness or fog. Please go and search online about Candida, don't just dismiss it without checking you don't have it.

stina, i've been there before. probably will again before this process is completely over. look for a group called recovery inc, find out where they have their weekly meetings and attend them and go at least three times. they have helped me out a lot, and the best part is you learn how to cope without meds! if you do please let me know how you do. this stuff is very important. and remember we're always here for ya!

Hey Sarah,

I took your tests and all of them I got a high score. A lot of the symptoms i do have and for a while wondered if i was pregnant because it seems they have some of the same symptoms (i'm not). The results are saying it can be a yeast-connection thing, but the doctor did a PAP and said he found no yeast... does that mean i do not have what you are talking about?

Posted (edited)

Stina,

I am not at all surprised at your results, this is a huge under-rated illness for millions in the USA, who have many symptoms they cannot explain or get rid of with any treatment. Oh and vaginal yeast may or may not be present with Candida, so the pap test may well not show yeast.

I have PM'd you more info.

Sarah

I have never even heard of the connection. Is it something they are just finding out about? Do doctors not know about it yet?

Hi Stina,

I understand you PERFECTLY, you don't know how much. Valeriana has helped me a lot and I started power yoga too, and although it's hard and I'm not in a very good shape, it also helps. I don't know other people, but having a pet and playing with it has been very good for me too... Drink lots of green tea too (in Starbucks they make one called Zen, with mint, delicious!). I hope you feel better soon :)
