PREGNANT... AT JUST 11

Schoolgirl will be UK's youngest mum

By Pete Samson

A GIRL who became pregnant at 11 is to become Britain's youngest mum.

The schoolgirl, who is now 12, discovered she was expecting after a boozy one-night stand with a 15-year-old.

She will be 12 years and eight months old when she gives birth next month.

The girl, who smokes despite being heavily pregnant, said: I didn't think I'd get pregnant

because it was my first time. But I'm really excited and looking forward to being a mum.

The 12-year-old comes from a large family in West Lothian, Scotland, and has an eight-month-old brother.

Her 34-year-old mother insists she is proud of her daughter.

The girl added:I think I'll cope as I've had lots of practice with my brothers.

I know how to feed a baby its bottle and I can change nappies.

But I panic and cry if they're sick and I don't like giving them a bath because I'm frightened.

The girl, who claimed she has given up drinking, wants a boy.

She had unprotected sex with the 15-year-old in Edinburgh last August. He could face legal action.

Britain's current youngest mum is Jenny Teague, of Dorset, who had a baby age 12 years and nine months in 1997.

Well, to be fair, what was the mother supposed to say to the media? "I think my daughter is a two-bit #######"?

She could say 'Im shocked and upset but I will support her thru this'

Anything but 'I am proud of her'

Proud of her for smoking drinking and having sex at age 11? What kind of attitude is that?

Man, that makes me proud to be a Dorset girl....

There will always be some silly people who do these things despite being 12 years old, no matter how hard we try to educate and prevent. But her mother should be slapped silly.

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

You know. Today's society may view that as really bad, and I agree with it but in truth, take 150 years back in time and you'll see it was pretty common to be married at age 12, having babies right after and all. The girl was fit to marry as soon as she had her first period, so we had 12 year old mothers all the time back then.

Of course that society has changed and pregnancy at age 12 is not accepted anymore, and I think is also completely wrong. Honestly? When I was 12 I was still playing with my Barbies and most certainly even though I knew what sex was and all of that, I couldn't picture myself as having sex with anyone. :o

She does not have to call her daughter a "#######," but if this were my daughter I think the word "disappointed" would be mentioned a lot. I would love my daughter, regardless, but I would not be happy about something like this and say I was "proud" of her.

True, but when confronted by the media people often say things on the spur of the moment.

Me, I would (of course) be disappointed. But I'm not sure I'd be anything other than 100% supportive of my daughter to a newspaper reporter. My point was that we can't assume comments the mother made reflect her real feelings on the matter.

Her 11 year old is out unsupervised, drinking and smoking - I think we can infer at least SOME culpability on the part of the mother.

I know where MY 10 year old is every moment of the day - and it isn't out smoking drinking and having sex with 15 year olds

I understand and agree. I was simply commenting on what I might say to the media - not on what my real feelings would be.

It's a concern I have sometimes. But on other occasions, I do the "dose of reality" thing. The past world where everyone was a perfect parent and kids never got into serious trouble is really a myth. It seems to me that as long as we've been able to reproduce, we've been able to be bad parents :D

I hear what you're saying - but to me there's a VAST difference between not getting it right occasionally and THIS case. Even if you discount the pre-age sex, (and I know teenage pregnancy is nothing new but this is PRE-TEEN!) there's the smoking and drinking and unsupervised conduct and the 11 year old's general attitude.
