Butter or Margarine

I was just reading a recipe in the Dinner forum which calls for margarine, which got me to thinking!

I only use butter, can't stand margarine or any other kind of unidentifiable spread, so just wondering what everyone else is up to out there when buttering - or not - their toast!

Also we went to a cafe for lunch the other day - for 'cooking like your mama used to make' - or something along those lines and they served some kind of spread with it that I am sure didn't even exist in 'mama's' day

I usually use only butter, but if I run out I do have marg so I can use that if necessary.

I use margarine most of the time..

only time I use butter is for Christmas baking... Butter is just too expensive to use all the time...

As much as I love real butter, I usually use the smart squeeze or I can't believe it's not butter spray.

I don't bake much so I rarely need it to cook with.

I grew up with margarine only. But no one I know here uses it at all so now I only have butter because no one else ever has margarine!

After my Dad suffered from a heart attack about 10 years ago, he was forced to use only margarine. He liked his butter a lot and has little self control, so it has always been banned from our house.

His heart was so severely clogged from mainly the butter he was eating (he ate a lot of it)

I know in moderation it is okay, but to use regularly is just sooo bad for the heart so i will always just stick to margarine... Becel Light only too, it's the best kind for you.

If it's something where I'll be able to taste the difference, I use butter. I use flaxseed oil, non-hydrogenated "spread" for everything else.

And yes, Momma had margarine "back in the day".... except it was white and they gave you a little packet of yellow colouring to make it look like butter.

Only butter - at Costco, it's only $7.70 for four 1-lb boxes. That's pretty cheap.

Butter butter butter and organic all the way! I grew up on margarine too but I think butter tastes way better.

butter - and like raymaga said, it is really cheap at Costco and it freezes very nicely. Butter is also very reasonable at Aldis. We always had butter growing up but then when I lived on my own I got into non-hydrogenated vegetable margarine for health reasons. Butter tastes different but they both tasted fine for me. Joe, however, won't eat margarine so we are back to butter. Sometimes, if it is something that doesn't really matter for taste I will use the margarine for baking - I do have some in the house as well. About cost - heck there are some margarines that cost the same as or more than butter!

95% butter, 5% margarine (baking only, if it's in the house). I've cut way down on my butter consumption, so that's more of a treat. When it goes on sale I stock up and freeze it. I don't trust spreads full of chemicals. Or sugar substitutes either. But that's another thread!

butter if we are baking....or out for dinner and they give us butter with the dinner rolls....

otherwise if it's something on toast or bread we are craving for then it's Peanut Butter.....
