I knew you'd be along before too long, Kaydee ;)

Personally, I think the next president - be they Democratic or Repulican - needs to be a lot more centerist in terms of domestic policy and needs to respect the rest of the world in terms of foreign policy. This deep polarisation in the country makes it very hard for meaningful change to occur because at any given time 50% of the people (give or take) feel like they're being dragged along for the ride on a trip they didn't choose to take. Maybe coming back towards the middle would create a more solid, united country with more power to institute and implement more inclusive policies.

I could live with that

Thankfully, only 31% of us are Bushbots now.

"Then you write, "Oh, they're just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." First of all, that is a terrible metaphor. This administration is not sinking. This administration is soaring. If anything, they are rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg!"

VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I completely agree with you, we need someone who will truly unify the country (without resorting to religious dogma)...

It isn't corporate issues that make or break the elections, it is social issues. It is abortion, gay marriage, same-sex adoption and the such that will keep Republics in office. They are conservative on these issues and so are the majority of Americans. These issues are bigger than any tax cut and are much more at the heart of voters.

Unfortunately, these issues do bring the Republican base to vote....even if it means going against what would be better in the long run for the country and them....Gay marriage isn't going to hurt me in anyway, but rising gas prices, the state of this country's healthcare, the constant pushing of someone else's "moral values" and definitely the state of the economy is going to have an impact in my quality of life.

I said it would keep Republicans in office, but I never mentioned that Republicans are the only ones that vote based on social issue. I know many people that jump parties based on these social issues and others-affirmative action, healthcare. Wouldn't social medicine be the "moral thing" to do? That would mean you are pushing your moral values on me and I don't appreciate that. ;) Just playing devils advocate and letting you know that the issues you brought up are social moral issues as well.

 We went totally off topic :o

Back to Jeb. I seriously doubt he would be on the ticket.

People vote on social issues, yes - but they have little say over who actually runs for President. That is decided, ultimately by the level of financial sponsorship a candidate is given to invest in an election campaign. Its no coincidence that almost all the candidates who run for president are neck deep in corporate interest. You don't have to look very hard at the folks currently running the show, for instance, to see that a lot of them, especially those in front-line in the cabinet almost all sit on the board of various trust funds and major corporations. I think that's probably true of almost every administration in recent times. The exception I suppose would be the candidates who run as independents - but they typically have a tendency of beinig independently wealthy too begin with.

So while you might vote on social issues, there's no guarantee whatsoever that any of the major candidates who is put forward actually represents those issues. Paying lip service to a particular issue be it abortion, capital punishment whatever does not mean the candidate supports that position.

I'm sure you can probable think of examples from past administrations - but the big stinker that springs to mind for me, recently at least, is how Bush et al went on this big pro-life rant during the Terri Schiavo case last year, completely overlooking the fact that a few short years before Governor GWB had previously introduced and approved the 'Futile Care Bill', that put the decision to terminate care of vegetative patients not in the hands of the family or the explicit wishes of the patient, but in the hands of the healthcare provider (i.e. a corporation!).
