The best way is Bank transfer. We used travelers checks though.

Don't bring the money here yet - why? The dollar is down and the economy is in extremely bad shape. Let your money do better in UK, till things improve here and the dollar recovers. Take whatever little money you need out of your account using ATM cards or writing a check to yourself but don't take it all out. Good Luck

hmmm.... since the dollar is at an all time low....wouldn't it make sense to buy US dollars now? There are still sectors of the market that are doing quite well. If I were you I'd bring that money over now and buy a house! There are plenty of undervalued properties right now and some nice looking interest rates. I doubt you can find a good sub prime rate right now! :D

Not true. Here's is the way it works in reality: You are allowed to bring as much currency with you as you feel comfortable traveling with. The actual rule is that if you are carrying more than $10,000 in currency you must report it upon entry into the US. If you don't and they find out, you will have to forfeit the money. Regardless, the money declared is not taxable. The US government is just ensuring that they establish a "paper trail" for large dollar amounts.

You could open an HSBC offshore account. They allow joint US$ and Sterling accounts so transfer as much as you want and it's easy to do all the transfers to/from UK/US banks. They give you debit cards for either currency too.

Also the transferring $10K limit for reporting to IRS is old info, pretty much all size of transfers are monitored as Elliot Spitzer can testify to!

Actually, the $10K refers to actual currency (cash). Wire transfers tend to be monitored in amoutns above $2K and bank employees are trained to report people who structure transactions, I.E. make cash transactions just under the $10K, or even frequently between $7K and $10K, which is how Spitzer made his way onto the FinCEN (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network) radar.

Hey guys!

I have an add on question to this (and I did try to find the info already!)

I have a lump sum (The marvelous SSIA for you irish hanging around) that I want to transfer.

If I transfer it now, into my Fiance's account, will he be taxed as it is above the annual tax free gift limit.

If I transfer it later, into my own account, will I be taxed again? Its all clean money and I've paid tax on it here in Ireland

Thanks for replies or points in the right direction!
