Because unless you happen to live right next door to a police station, your chances of the police arriving in time to prevent some dirtbag from harming you are not very good. I prefer to have a fighting chance.

I don't want to single you out, I just happened to notice a few of your posts in this thread which reflect strong opinion, so I've quoted you to make a point :)

Living in the UK all my life, I think I find it hard to appreciate the bolded sentiment, there. Whilst I think gun crime is on the rise, I believe it's still a fraction of what you experience in the US. I'm sure there are other countries in the same boat, so you may have to forgive the opposed attitude towards guns of some people, especially on a diverse forum such as this.

On the other hand, I've learnt an awful lot about US culture in the last year or so, thanks to my other half. While it's still difficult for me, I can see that having had the right to gun ownership almost enshrined from the word go, largely due to understandable circumstances, my mindset is probably as alien to you as yours is to me.

The video was funny until the BS part about Americans kidnapping Africans to bring to the US.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Surely you've heard of concealed weapon permits.....?

You don't have to be a police officer or some other member of law enforcement to get that kind of permit?

nope, i'm neither and i have a cch.

how so? what is the problem with the gun laws in the usa?

Charles, have a look at gun deaths in the U.S. compared to the rest of the world and you will see the major problem going on.

Wake up!

um you might wish to take a closer look at them yourself, you'll see very few law abiding citizens are the problem. also, i've yet to see a news story on a cch holder using one to commit a crime.

are you really suggesting that there be an intelligence test for gun ownership?

If there is ever anything that should require a test, I'd say gun ownership fits the bill! You have to take a series of tests to be licensed to drive a car... why not to own a gun?

you have to take a test to carry concealed............

I my myself have experienced in some ways about guns. I never seen a gun or had an experience with any untill my first trip to the USA. In the 4 months I was there, 1 old lady was robbed, shot and killed in her own home. Approx 1 month later 2 young girls were shot dead on the back of the head. These 3 murders were all in the same street I lived in.

I couldnt believe what happened. In other times I was there, I seen young teenagers with shotguns, I seen adults with guns and this was all in a timeframe of 4 months. Not the best of experiences by any means.

In my eyes the USA is gun happy and part of the culture. Take a look back at the old black and white movies. There was hardly a film made that didnt show guns eg- Westerns, Gangster films.

A car could be used as a deadly weapon too especially how dumb ### drivers are today on the road lol.

The car dealership could have gotten more creative and offered an array of self defense weapons as gifts - a tazer, a pair of nunchakus, a billy club, brass knuckles, a switchblade...perhaps throw in a case of pepper spray and some handcuffs.

yes it could have, but a gun is a far more effective method of deterring a would be attacker, or preventing a crime from being committed. All the additional items you mention above need for the holder to be relatively close to the criminal and a gun can ensure that you are a safe distance away yet with the ability to stop the criminal in his tracks. I think the car dealership were quite clever in realizing this and ensuring their customers were safe.

Some of the responses in here make me sad. They also make me very aware that a lot of Americans do not trust each other and/or are afraid of each other. And then there is that certain someone who is just an a s s.

Yep. I think I'll go back to not reading OT. :(
