Has anyone purchased software to learn a language? I'm considering Rosetta Stone's Tagalog L1/L2; is it worth the cost?

Rosetta Stone's

I did hear that the program was excellent, but that was a while ago. I think it costs a small fortune.

I have been studing some tagalog books that I bought, but my wife speaks to me in tagalog a lot (and now her friends do too). If you decide to make that investment, please let me know how it works out for you. I have also considered taking a Tagalog in Beverly Hills. For now, I'm just reading, speaking, and asking questions as much as possible, which I find to be very, very important when first learning a language.

It's expensive. Maybe it's worth it... Maybe it's not.

Rosetta is good, but is a little bit expensive. But if u really want to learn basic tagalog you can check the website below.

THis is a free website for tagalog language. I used to teach my husband tagalog but he does not have patience.

Rosetta Stone is excellent. It is widely used by many Government agencies for language training.

Having personally used it for Bahasa Indonesia, I believe it is well worth the investment.

I'm currently using Pimsleur to learn Vietnamese. It seems O.K. and I am learning slowly. Whatever you do DO NOT purchase anything from Ectaco. They make a line of shoddy translators/electronic dictionaries and language software.

Regarding RosettaStone: The system works for most people to be able to speak a bit of the language in a very short time. If you like computer based courses this is for you. If you place a lot of emphasis on grammar or just want to learn a few touristy phrases you might want to look elsewhere.

I personally think RosettaStone is overpriced for what it offers. The concept is cheap. They use the same pictures in every language, just replacing the sound and descriptions with the respective language you buy.

True. But the pictures depict objects that are common to all people, irrespective of the language.

At the end of the day, conversation with a native speaker is the best way to learn. Hiring a language tutor will cost much more than this program.

The Rosetta Stone is excellent, but I find only if you wish to learn Hieroglyphic, Demotic or classical Greek languages.

Thank you for the website. Maraming salamat po. Hopefully I'll have down some of the basics before my family arrives in the states. I know a fair amount of spanish and that makes it a little easier since a lot of tagalog words have spanish orgin.

We always need to start the basic first and apply words to it, add something to it.. Basic question, who, what, where, how, why , no need to worry numbers because we have our language mixed with english sometimes.. Unlike here in the arab country I have to learn how to count in arabic because nobody speak english.

I always used to do a research when my husband wants to buy something.. I gave him an option all the time which one is cost effective, I am like devil's advocate.. But if he really like I dont have a say so also.. Im just giving him option to balance it out before buying.

Goodluck!
