It has to be more difficult living in a relationship with multiple wives than in a relationship with only one wife.

the following is a news article about the current actions going on in Texas with regards to this latter day Branch Davidians.

534 women, children leave polygamist ranch

This link is to a book from Amazon written by a woman that escaped from this group.

Escape by Carolyn Jessop

a couple of comments from the Amazon customer review section for this book.

"Jessop is frank (though not vulgar or graphic) in her discussions about sexuality within her plural marriage and well she needs to be, for sex plays a strange but crucial role in these marriages. Though the women generally hate their husbands, they still want to have sex with him--not for the sake of love or intimacy, but because sex is power. The wife who gains sexual favor with her husband is the wife who can use him to further her own desires. Often these desires pit her against the other wives. It is an odd situation where wives who hate their husband seek to have sex (which they hate) with their husband (whom they hate) so they can further their hate-filled plans towards each other. So much, then, for the idealized content of "sister wives" that the cult seeks to portray to the world."

"I decided to read this book after seeing Carolyn Jessop on a repeat of Oprah last week. While I found her storytelling to be erratic, it occurred to me that her life, up until her escape, was erratic. Imagine living in a household with 40+ people, not having control over your body, your children, your money, or any other aspect of your life. Her writing style is a reflection of the type of life she was forced to live. The abuses detailed in this book are being perpetrated against other women and children right now, in this country, which is a thoroughly disgusting thought. I found her story fascinating, in a sick sort of way. I couldn't put it down."

Not mormons. They broke off of the LDS religion and made their own. They are nothing at all like mormons. The women dress in these freaky home made dresses and hats. If you saw them you would think they are Amish.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

Those stories make my skin crawl. I'll never understand it.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

It does seem amazing that ritual abuse of women can take place in this day and age. However, the type of person who is susceptible to this type of abuse is probably also the type of person who seeks strong spiritual guidance as well. It's like they need someone else to take control of their lives or they can't cope. Very, very sad. The good thing is that this is being addressed now but I am sure another group will spring up to take it's place. The leaders of these groups are also highly flawed individuals but I suspect they must be charismatic as well to attract and persuade people that their ideas not only make sense but are the only path to happiness or whatever is promised.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Not too many come from "outside" and join -- most of the members were born and raised inside the group. So it's pretty much all they've known since childhood. Some do eventually break away -- but often not until they're in their 30s or 40s.

The original adherents have to have been recruited in some way - the fact that they are self perpetuating is another matter.

This group split off from the mainstream LDS church back in the 20s and 30s -- specifically over the mainstream church's renunciation of polygamy.

Most of this offshoot group's followers today are members of those original families, and their descendants.

A muslim man can have 4 wives, but must treat each equally with money and time. I don't know too many men that can hang with that.

I cannot believe this #### happens in a 1st world nation in 2008.. Where you can basically seal off a town and then claim freedom of religion.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
