I am fluent in both Spanish and English since I was born in Colombia but was raised in the States. All my adult life I was told that I was pretty lucky to speak both languages since that would get me ahead and I'd get paid more. Never happened and I thought it was all garbage.

Then I was forced to find a new job before my contract expired on the one I had. The new one I found paid very well and it was for a bilingual applicant, I had no experience at all and the only reason I was hired over all the other people who applied was because I am fluent in both. That's when I realized of the importance of knowing both languages.

Great to hear! Keep up the good work.

I love learning languages - I was thinking of maybe learning Russian, I am sure that would be interesting.

Why does it make you a noob?

Don't speak spanish I was a complete noob in HS and college and took french instead, thought there was a good possibility I'd live in Europe and I might be interested in international business, so it made sense at the time.

I don't speak Spanish, but I am from Italy therefore I speak Italian and for some reason Italians and Spanish speaking people can still get the basic meaning of conversation using their respective languages since there are many similarities (but for a few incidents that might happen with some words such as "burro"... In Italian it means "butter" :P )

I agree it is an asset in the United States if you speak fluent Spanish.

Great topic. I was told since i'm here now in the US that speaking languages is best in terms of finding a job. I'm happy of that because as an european i was raised in this philosophy but while living in canada, especially quebec, i felt really stuck as a sandwitch in the battle of french-english that became a litteral phobia of the spirit of speaking the other's language. Here i feel i breath in any language i can, it's so much appreciated, especially i couldn't speak much english there as i wanted. And I learned Spanish in school, it's soo romantic language...

 My favorite is La Vita et Bela!

Now back to topic, I speak spanish and english, but still I want to take english classes when I get to States. I'm not sure if I remember all the grammar rules, I took english classes from grade school to high school, and that was a loooong time ago!

Churipu, I love the italian language ! Ever since I visited Italy I've been wanting to take italian lessons, but I never make the time to actually do it! I think it would be very easy because our languages are alike. On my first day in Torino a taxi driver and I sustained a long conversation! LOL he spoke to me in italian and I responded in spanish!

Awww! It made me cry too, at the begining you have no idea how sad it's going to get.. I remember thinking after the first "happy part" was over.. so is this what the movie is going to be all about? Why did everyone told me it was great? But after that it's when the movie actually begins! ;)

Non-spanish skills will you take Spanish class or hire a tutor?

i feel bad that i have poor English skills (don't you try to make fun of me because I'm not good in English) Anway, i will take ESL class and if possible Spanish class too.

I can speak enough I guess, but if you dont use it, you lose it. I took 4 years in school and grew up around all spanish speaking ppl. I teach my son all I know and my step dad is mexican, so when I forget something I just say: Como se dese____ in espanol? my spelling is off there lol

Anyway, dont feel bad about your english.. you will get better everyday. :) As far as a tutor or classes, check with your local community college.

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!
