ON one hand, the neighbors don't sound like asses. they do sound like people who don't know how to train a dog. Would you feel comfortable about going over sometime and talking with them about their dog? Listen to how they got the dog, why they have a dog, etc. I will be surprised if you don't find out that they would like to have a better behaved dog as well. You didn't mention children ove there but....if that dog is not trained now, wouldn't that be a dangerous situation if they ever decide to ever have children?

I think there is a good possibility that they don't know what to do. If you are comfortable, maybe you could help them formulate a plan.

Good luck!

 I aggree. Unless you plan to move soon, you certainly dont want to create ill feelings. There is a good likelihood that these ppl just dont know what to do or how to go about getting their dog to behave. This is not an excuse, it's still their responsibility to be sure the dog dosent harm anyone. If you see this dog out loose again, better to get the animal control involved and perhaps they can "enlighten" ur neighboors a little.

Shooting a dog? Comeon!

I think i'd be getting my video camera out when the dog is out and worked up. Just in case.

I know a girl who was attacked unprovoked by a dog in her yard and it went right for her face. She was in so much pain and had a lot of scaring from what that dog did to her. I wouldn't trust a strange dog, especially one who got into my yard.

I would let the neighbors know the next time it happens I will be calling animal control.

While yes it is true they might "wish" to have a better behaved dog, it's part of being a responsible pet owner to keep your dog secure and in control in your yard. It's not safe for the dog to be in the street and it's not safe for you for the dog to be in your yard. If they can't keep this dog in it's own yard and under control, then IMO they don't deserve to own a dog.

Peejay: I hope you can find a solution for this problem. I hate when people don't control their animals, especially when they act like nothing is wrong. We have a dog and I would not want for her to be a problem for others. I would definitely call Animal Control if you see the dog loose, whether or not it is currently chasing someone. Like others have said, lucky the dog was facing you, a person with some animal sense, instead of someone who went running scared.

Just shoot the damn thing, and let it rot! It would make great target practice to get ready for deer season!

My next door neighbor has a black and white short haired pointer. We just have a 4 foot high chain link fence that divides our property line. Since they moved in about 6 months ago the beast goes into a frenzy whenever we are in our back yard and goes ballistic whenever we have to get close to the fence to do yard work. I've never done anything to antagonize the animal. I haven't complained about it because they put the dog inside at night, so we at least get some sleep without the dog barking all night.

Anyway, that is not my gripe.

About a month ago I was taking a stroll around the neighborhood to enjoy the nice weather and the lady next door happened to be walking the beast on a retractable leash. I was completely on the other side of the street. The animal charged at me so aggressively that it literally yanked the leash out of my neighbor's hand and this frigging mutt ran full speed across the street. He stopped less than a foot from me and began snarling and snapping at me. The #######'s hair was standing up on his back. Not good! He threw saliva from his teeth on my legs...he got that close in his rage at me. I knew better than to run and stood my ground. My neighbor finally got her mutt under control and apologized profusely. I was not amused, but I let it slide.

This morning I was working in my driveway and guess who I see rounding the corner of my house? The beast himself! This time he not on a leash and my neighbor is nowhere in sight. I found out later the dog managed to get out of his fence through an unsecured gate in its yard. The SoB charged me from across my yard and I got a dose of the same routine I got a month ago...only this incident lasted several minutes. I finally managed to back up the 30 feet to my back door and managed to open it while facing down this mentally ill mutt. I slammed the door in his face. He was on my azz the entire 30 feet!

Several minutes later the dog left my yard and took off down the street out of sight. So I went next door to tell these people to come get their damned dog and lock him up. They weren't at home. While walking back to my house I noticed my neighbor across the street came outside to do some work in his front yard. I walked over to warn him of the situation and advised him to do yard work later. Too late! The beast returned and charged both of us. My neighbor freaked out at this crazy mutt going ballistic at us. I had to tell him a couple of times to hold his ground and not to run. The dog finally disengaged and ran down the street, but was still in sight. I then decided to go back inside my house, but this time I was more than 100 feet from my door. Before I even got into my yard the beast charged me again and kept me from moving while lunging and snapping at me. In the mean time my neighbor guy got a shovel and was coming to my rescue, but the mutt ran away again.

When I got inside I was debating about whether to call the cops or animal control when the owners of the animal drove into their driveway. I went outside to confront them and their dog ran up to greet them. I was pissed and lit into them verbally while staying my distance. They disappeared into their house with their dog in tow by his collar. I'm still pissed and there is a hell of lot lot more I want to say to them, but I will wait for a more opportune time.

Thank God it was me the dog went after instead of a child, one of the little old ladies in our neighborhood, or my wife. I am quite sure this animal would maul anyone that ran from it. Mad dogs smell fear and have no mercy for the weak. Not a month goes by when I read about someone in Houston being severely mauled or killed by vicious dogs that get loose from their irresponsible owner's control and attack innocents.

I like dogs and had them as pets as a kid, but if I had a mutt like this I would have it euthanized. My neighbors are criminally and civilly liable under the laws in the state of Texas if this animal attacks someone. You can be sure I will take this matter up with my neighbors again. This is unacceptable in a densely populated urban neighborhood.

Sometimes being nice to people doesn't get through to them. Some people you have to catch off guard to get them to do what needs to be done. If they just walk away from you when you're yelling at them about their dog who could end up badly hurting or even killing someone, it sounds like they don't give a $hit. As long as you're willing to actually do it, I'd tell them you're going to shoot their dog the next time it comes after you.

I also like Charles' idea.

Holy cow. That's scary. Call Animal Control. Don't wait for a more opportune time. I remember a couple of years ago in this area someone's dog got out of their house and entered the house of a neighbor and attacked someone.

There's responsible dog ownership and then there's this.

Peejay, how are you doing?

The title and subject matter of your post above caught my attention because I am one of those you describe. I have

a dog who is part of my family. A pet, son, companion, my life guard and most importantly my faithful friend who

never complains and seeks me out when he sense that I am in a rut, like right now.

I come to you not to fill your head with ideas on how to get rid of that dog. The pearl clutching oohs and aahs and the

call the cops is not the way peejay. Please, if you have not yet called the police on the innocent animal, I BEG you

not to have the dog slain, defenseless without a chance to fight.

You said that as a child you had a dog. I am sure you remember how much he/she meant to you then. Peejay I also

assume that you must be aware that dogs, in particular, like the lion in the jungle...or territorial animals and will

protect their turf with their life.

Think peejay, think of what generated the nasty temper that you describe while near the fence to his yard while you

worked in yours. The dog was only doing what any dog would do peejay, and that is to protect his turf. He might

have mistook you as a threat. Dogs go through their short lives depended on their ability to smell. They do not

normally depend on what they see, they sniff and smell their food before they eat. This way they decide if they like

what he/she is eating. I believe strongly peejay, that the dog sensed that you were a threat, when you were not.

I wrote here I think only one or two days ago about the exact incident that you describe today. However I had several

large dogs in my yard. I had a fence exactly as you describe in your rant. One of my dogs, which I forgot completely

to mention in my post, named Rico --- a midnight black Labrador. Talk about territorial. First let me tell you what

Rico did one day that had the cops knocking on my door.

My neighbor called the cops(yeah, clutching his pearls) and said Rico nearly caught him by the throat as he walked

near my chain link fence. He demanded that Rico was illegal because he need papers `sic`, I produced Rico`s

license and documentation for all his shots, rabis, temperament ect, ect. to prove that he was not an illegal

immigrant, so to speak. Well I got a warning.

Next day I had a six foot wooden fence built all around my yard, which is enormous I have to add.

Rico passed away in his sleep some years ago. When anyone not a member of my family walked in the back

yard when Rico was around, that someone would quickly learn what a territorial dog is and what he does to

let you know where you stand.

The electrician guy once came inside the fence to read the meters to my home. Rico approached playfully because

I was there. Rico went near the electrician and raised his leg and pissed on his shoes. Peejay by no means do I

suggest that you allow that same thing to happen with this dog. I only mention this incident in a desperate way

to convince you that killing a dog will not solve anything. Another dog will follow, then another and another. We

simply cannot kill dogs simply because they are territorial animals. Don`t you protect you turf peejay? It is

exactly the same thing. Only that dogs cannot communicate to tell you not to come too close to him.

Today I own a four-year old pure blooded Chinese Shar pie...My friend. I would stand up against the wall to

be shot before allowing any policeman to slay my friend.

According to the history of the Shar pie dog, the Chinese during the Wong Dynasty many many years ago of course,

bred the Shar pei as a fighting dog. The dog would be thrown into a deep pit to fight another to their death. This dog

is all muscle and jaw, designed cleverly for fighting. (click Shar pei dog images at Google) to see my dog peejay.

My Shar pei, of course was weened from his mother and brought home by my daughter. He has grown as high as

he will during his life time. Short and extremely stocky, he is but a toy to anyone who approaches him. But that

can only come through training.

I love my dog peejay. I care for my friend.....I do not know, nor do I care about your neighbor or if he trains or not

his dog.

My only concern...My personal concern is the dog at issue here. Please peejay. Do no kill this dog.

I have to assume that you are an intelligent person. I can tell that by the way you express yourself with words and

your typing skills. Avoid any and all confrontations with this dog. You can do that if you want. You know you can.

Your conscious will be clear whenever you hear that dog bark late late at nigh, peejay.

Even if you call the Humane Society to pick him up. Death is a certainty and your call his death sentence.

Please PM me. Let me talk you out of killing this dog.

Please

With all due respect to the above poster, Nighthawk, - this dog was not defending his territory. This dog was the aggressor and a potentially dangerous aggressor.

Peejay, you need to document the times and incidents in writing and send a letter to your neighbour detailing the problems. You may wish to talk to a few of your neighbours as well to see if they have similar events to relate. Write all of these down, send the letter by registered mail advising the owners that unless they take immediate steps to address these issues, the police and animal control will be called the next time the animal is loose or there is an incident similar to the leash one. If this means taking their dog to obedience training, fine. If this means that the dog never leaves the house unmuzzled whether he is loose in the yard or on walks, then so be it. If this means them getting rid of the dog, that is their choice. They own the dog and dog ownership comes with responsibilities. If they fail to fulfill their responsibilities then you do call the police and the animal control people - and provide them with the copy of the letter you sent and the registration that proves it was received. While the dog is an 'innocent' animal, it is still a dangerous and aggressive dog with the very real potential of causing grievous harm or even death.

I am an animal lover. I am friends with all of the neighbourhood dogs - and there are lots. I dog sit for neighbours when they go away. There are two pitbulls who live 2 doors down who often escape their collars or break their chains. I have taken them home a number of times. These animals are not aggressive or territorial but they have dog instincs and act like dogs - and this is annoying when I have to stop them barking at our cats in the window or chasing neighbours cats through our yard. But, that being said, they are not aggressive or violent, just a nuisance. Barking dogs are a nuisance. There is a world of difference between 'a nuisance' and 'a danger'. The situation you have there is dangerous. A dog that is that aggressive is not a safe dog and the situation is a tragedy waiting to happen.

Good luck in finding a solution to this.

Right on kathryn41! I understand too the concern you're expressing, nighthawk, but did you read the OP? This dog is dangerous and its owners are being irresponsible.

The best solution is for them to get involved in some good dog training with a professional. Dogs cannot be allowed to go after people in the neighborhood nor in their own yards. Yes they are territorial (I have had a few dogs in my life and have one now) but they need to behave and their owners need to be responsible for them.

I do not agree with euthanizing dogs just because they're aggressive (and whoever suggested shooting this dog is just immature). Have you ever seen the Dog Whisperer? Amazing things can be done by people who understand dog behavior and can teach the owners how to "reprogram" their dog. Many times the owners of dogs like this are clueless about how a dog's brain works even though they absolutely love their pet. They often treat them like a human member of the family, like I'm afraid you do, nighthawk (great intentions, bad results...which you described well for us) which screws up their behavior. They need an authoritative "well-balanced" (as cesar would say) leader to be happy, friendly, NORMAL dogs. Remember...be calm ASSERTIVE

...this works well with teens too btw lol. This is probably how peejay survived his encounters with his neighbor's unbalanced dog.

Kathryn41, thank you for your well writen comment to my post in defense of a dog doomed to die. No one

disputes that the dog in question is dangerous. I do not intend to take sides like I said previously. If you read peejay

correctly, I am sure that you saw no evidence where he says that the dog was running loose attacking anyone in

sight.

The only mention of other people are the ones that came too close to peejay, making them targets as well. I am sure

that you mean well, especially knowing that you love dogs and animals in general. As a dog sitter as you say that

you cared for different kinds of dogs, I am sort of skeptical of your knowledge of dogs, in particular because you

assert, that the dogs that you cared for were not territorial. With all due respect Kathryn41, and believe me I do

not wish to engage in an argument over this dog. But you just have to understand, that all dogs, all of them, no

matter what breed, are territorials. Dogs in general kathryn41 are the type of creatures that come from a long

line of African wild dogs. I just do not see any reason to doubt that you already are aware of that. If you like dogs

like you say I am sure you have seen Television series of African wild dogs and how they protect their territory. But

none of this is relevant to my appeal for the life of a neglected dog, by its owners.

I just appealed to peejay hoping against hope that he is not into Texas justice on Capital Punishment, a State that

executes condemn men like no other nation on Earth. Kill the dog sounds so Texas The dog is dangerous I agree with

everyone that has said that. I do not dispute that. I only hope that death is not the outcome.

Thank you Kathryn41 your advise to peejay is very sound and I respect it.

CBR, Good evening, how are you?

Yours is the most interesting and the one who understands where I am coming from in asserting that dogs are indeed

territorial. I do not seek to make anyone look bad and I am glad that you know a thing or two about the dogs and

their temperament and obedience toward its owners, when well trained.

I take my hat off to you...oh wait, I do not wear a hat. I salute you CBR for beginning your comment with a praise to

Kathryn41 for her sincere expertise and concern for the issue involve in this matter. You sound like a real Dog

Whisperer fan. I have seen the program and think Cesar is pretty cool headed which I am sure has saved him his

hands. Obviously, an attack on Cesar by a dog is not going to be shown CBR, but I agree that the program is very

educational for dog lovers.

I do pretend that my dog Simba is a member of my family. But I respectfully disagree that this decision is a bad one.

I have had many many dogs in my life --- which is quite extensive mind you. Many dogs CBR and I truly believe

that Cesar would ask for my advise at one time or another, when deciding to treat my dog as one of my family. It

is not CBR a bad decision....Oh, I do not speak about bringing a stray dog out of the alley and telling him that he is

my family member. All my dogs have been weened from their Mothers as puppies. What better advantage do you

want to train a dog, without having to call Cesar?

Again CBR, the issue here is not whether the dog in question is ruthless or not. That question has been answered all

around in the affirmative. No question there.

The question is whether he should die. The one who should be taken out in the middle of the alley and stumped silly

is the owner. Someone wrote that to suggest shooting the dog is inmature, and I disagree with that too. For one to

say that a dog should be shot is one who really needs professional help. For goodnesssake, it is a dog! An

animal! He cannot distinguish friend from foe if one comes too close to him. He need training, and that falls on the

owner. He should have his ####### handed to him in an alley.

Sincerly CBR, you have a good comment here today. Thank you
