Boy I lost pretty big on this. Although I knew it was coming once WB retreated to Blew Ray.

I really thought HD-DVD had a good chance. Their players were less problematic and more affordable than Blu Ray.

I have a 800 dollar HD-DVD player. I learned my lesson. The only loser in a format war is the comsumer. :(

Ouch! That sucks! I was fortunate during the Beta/VHS format wars. I bought a VHS. But in a sense I was a looser because the damn thing cost me $500 back in the 80's. Blue-Ray will be the same way. Right now you can get them for $300 at CircuitCity but I am sure 5 years from now they will be $100. I guess it depends on how far ahead of the curve you want to be. The older I get the less I care if I have the "latest" thing. I would rather hang back and let them work out the bugs and see the prices come down.

I cannot believe Blu-ray won. Sony are such rip off artists. They make Apple look cheap..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

What I think it is funny is how the electronics industry panicked when porn "chose" HD-DVD over Blu-Ray as their format of choice. I wrote "chose" in parenthesis because Sony (at least initially) didn't allow pornography on their format. Industry insiders said that when porn went onto HD-DVD, that would boost HD-DVD over Blu-Ray, just as it did VHS over Betamax, and Sony would end up losing again.

I think what some forgot was that during the 1980s, when the battle between VHS and Betmax was taking place, the Internet (as we know it today) didn't exist. Therefore, if someone wanted access to porn, the only viable options were magazines or videos (and some less-than-reputable theaters, but those began to close down after the 1970s). With worldwide access to the Internet today, if someone wants porn, all they have to do is log online, without going through the embarrassment of purchasing a magazine or videotape.

Blu-Ray players should come down in price now that the format war is done with.

About bloody time - should see a lot more uptake of next-gen players now. I think a lot of people were holding off while the format war was going on. I'm just glad that the best technology won.

Ahh, most of you probably aren't old enough to remember the last "burn" when Sony Beta lost out to VHS and everyone that had Beta machines, which by the way, dolloar for dollar compared to todays prices amount to probably three times waht you paid now for a player, so live and learn......

I've held off on my purchase because I thought that Sony was "due".....Lord knows over the years they've been trying again and again to push their "standards" off on us, and this time they scored!

Oh ya we had a beta machine!!! As a child I'm sure I recall my dad stating he bought it for the better porn choices!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

We held off on buying a VCR until the format war was over. Once we did buy one, however, we really got one. lol We bought an Akai 4-head Stereo VHS VCR for something like $800. I think those were down to $79 a few years ago. lol

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

It's a better technology, plain and simple. It's more expensive because it's better.

Sony has had some pretty spectacular failures with their proprietary technologies - Minidisc (only a success in parts of Europe) and the UMD mini-DVD format for their PSP.
