BTW - nooone should buy use this news as the basis to buying a Blu-Ray player in the near future. Apart from the PS3 - all of the players currently on the market are obsolete.

Not so, there are plenty of standalone BluRay players out now that are not obsolete. HD-DVD is what will become obsolete.

HDDVD had the ability to go up to 54GB with a 3 layered disc. But that's besides the point. I'm only trying to point out that they had more similarities than differences.

No, that's Bluray (double-layered). HD-DVD doesn't go higher than 45GB, even with 3 layers. 15GB per layer.

I was off by 3GB.

I was going from this article - something to do with the current firmware and not all current players being upgradeable.

It would be like buying a PC that doesn't support USB 2.0.

Triple-layered 51GB HD-DVD discs do not exist, Matt. Not yet, anyway. "Toshiba announced", etc.

Double-layered 54GB Blu-ray discs are here today.

Wow, I was unaware that BluRay still hadn't released a player that could connect to the internet. Yet they still won the format war!

Best man doesn't always win, eh?
