My employer told me that my wife can't be insured yet under the company's insurance plan because she doesn't have her social security number yet. Is this common? The insurance company is United Health Care. I'm wondering if my company just didn't want to have to deal with some extra paperwork.

My husband's insurance company is the same and i was never asked for a SSN.

However, keep in mind that i was already his domestic partner under his insurance.

I would recommend calling United Health Care directly and asks if it is really a requirement.

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.

Ask then what is the procedure for people who are ineligible for an SSN? It is probably a little known process that they do not know exists... Because to the best of my knowledge, health insurance cannot be denied due to a lack of SSN...

YMMV

Well I am now fianally insured over my husband insurance and still dont have a SSN#.

They did through a fit,but I got a letter fom the SSO stating that I am able to have a SSN# but not right now,so we sent that to the health insurance and I am now finally insured.

Have your HR department call the insurance company. Having a valid SSN should not be a requirement to add your wife to your insurance. A birthdate should suffice until an SSN is issued. It sounds like the employer isn't being very helpful! Be firm on this; health insurance is too important! Showing a marriage certificate should be sufficient evidence.

HMM, sounds like they are wrong, and don't let the time run too long. With many insurance companies if not done within a certian time from the marriage whe will have to wait for the next open enrollment.

They do have to have a SS# to be insured under the policy... also, just for information... you may want to check with your employer to see if there is a limited amount of time after you are married that you can add your spouse. I only have 30 days with BC/BS to add my husband after we are married... Good Luck!

Sorry, forgot to add, as someone stated above... you can usually contact your health care company and see if they will accept the letter from the SS office as proof that she has at least applied. I used to work for an insurance company and the rules are very strict about certain things, that being one of those things... different companies have different requirements in what they will accept, however. So ultimately, it's up to the insurance company... if you can get the name and contact info of one rep that you speak with at the insurance company, they may be able to be a point of contact which is a great.

We're with Aetna and I was insured from the day we married. I haven't been asked for SSN yet that I know of. Doesn't make sense to me that they need it, I mean what do they do with newborns - they also don't have one yet :)

I do know that the Dr's office is pretty hot to trot in knowing my SSN tho. I keep forgettiong to bring it in :) Not sure why they need it either?

I was covered under my husband's insurance (then fiancé) the moment I crossed the border. He is with Blue Cross. They told him it's automatic with a K-1 visa. We were married a week later but I had yet to apply for a SSN. Either someone does not know their job or that insurance company has a different policy.

You shouldn't need a SS # to add your wife onto your plan. Call UHC and ask them. Also as it's a life changing event, you probably only have 30 days to add her to the plan......
