I'm inclined to agree with you guys (charles and tiger) - I live in a suburban community about 45 miles from Manhattan and it's very quiet out here. Almost no violent crime to speak of. Some property crime.

But these are all anecdotes. I'm just wondering if there's an actual study that looks into this with the expected rigor. I'm sure there is. I googled and I get lots of citations but no actual text.

I have never seen anything remotely like this scene in almost a half century of living in my city. But this ####### seems like everyday in NY & LA. My comment makes perfect sense.

just another case of the outsider looking in....'it seems like i happens everyday in NY & LA'...yea it would seem that way wouldn't it? if your sources are gangster flicks and gangsta rap videos...gimme a break...i am from brooklyn, and believe me its not the picture that people paint of it...people are just as messed up in other places

and the comment about southern small towns is dead on...the back roads of quincy, florida scare me much more than nyc

Well, I hardly consider those sources you quoted as creditable. And, note, I did say seems like everyday. My point is the frequency of these horrific events is far higher in the big cities. I can't think of one incident, in my neck of the woods, that has happened even close to what I witnessed on that clip. I'm sorry, I cannot agree people are just as messed up everywhere.

These things are isolated incidents. To say freaky weird crimes like this one happen more in cities might be accurate (I really don't know) but it's not really the question. The point is that I doubt it would affect your quality of life living in a city. But to each his own. Some people are meant for the cities and some are meant for the small towns.

always possible, given larger numbers = anonymity. greater chance for people in a smaller population base to know you.

Also: larger numbers = more watchful eyes. It's easier to commit a crime in the middle of nowhere than

it is in the middle of a densely populated city.

This goes way beyond simple math. Let's not forget social values in this complex formula. A city of a million filled with one mix of socioeconomic classes would have a quite different crime rate than one filled with a different sampling.

Depends. What kind of crime are we more worried about? Violent, visible crime? Or white-collar crime that happens behind the scenes, which we don't see and therefore don't feel?

Well,... I worry more about the crime like I see on that clip far more. The kind that puts loved ones in caskets or permanently disables them. That run over individual now has a permanent disability from what I saw.
