I'm currently studying for my written test too, and I found this website which has been helpful. They have a few different practise tests, but bear in mind that they are general questions and you will have to read your state's booklet for info on your state's specific laws. I was able to download the Ohio booklet from the DMV website, or you can go to your local DMV and pick up a hard copy. Good luck!

Don't worry to much about the questions... I read through the handbook of the state I'm in twice and that was all I needed to be prepared for the test, it really ain't hat hard, it's more common sense. Good luck!

I don't want to sound too over-positive, but the written exam is not that hard. My husband took it about a year ago, and at that time, his English was kinda poor and he passed on the first time. He glanced over the booklet with "rules of the road" while we were on the way to the DMV & time spent waiting in line. He did have a DL in his home country, but we have totally different rules here.

One thing he said that puzzled him, was there was a section of the exam where there were about 10-15 pictures of street signs with no writing and you had to match the names of what would be said on them. So there was a red octagon, and then you had to match the word "STOP" with it. Some of the signs arent seen that often so he was pondered for a while. Study those.

Good luck!

My husband just took his written test today. "Rules of the Road" def helps and I prepped him on the road signs without words in them (duh, i mean that is why they have words in them!). He has never driven before, so we just got the learner's permit. Has anyone recently taken the IL road test? What exactly do they test on? I want to make sure we practice everything before he takes the road test. I'm originally from NJ - so never took an IL road test, just the written. And in NJ - you actually test on a course, not an actual road! Please share any experiences, thanks!

My husband was here about three weeks and got his Illinois drivers license and state of Illinois ID card.

For the license all you need is your original birth certificate and social secutiry card. Then you pay your fees ($10 or $20) then take the written test, vision test, and then the road test. Once you pass all those, then you get your license the same day.

Oh yea...there are about 15 signs you should know.

These are the exact ones:

1. reduction in lanes

2. crossroad

3. do not enter

4. stoplight ahead

5. stop

6. no right turn

7. slow moving vehicle

8. yield right of way

9. school zone

1o. merge

11. no u turn

12. pedestrian walking

13. road construction

14. no passing zone

15. railroad warning

I know because I just renewed my license.

I do not know how often you have to do it, but it was my time after having a license for over 20 years.

In Illinois you only have to take a written test over if you've had your DL expired for over a yr. Otherwise you only go in for an eye exam, pay the $ and take a pic and you are done with your renew... this is regardless of how long you had the DL. The only time they tell you take a driving test over is if you are over 70 or 75.

As for the driving part of the test. Its fairly simple on the road. Make a right, make a left, switch lanes, my husband said it was just normal driving situations, nothing "test" related. But his instructor also asked him to speed up to cut a guy off, cause he was in a rush to get back to the testing center.
