i do not think on has to be illegal to "stuff their pockets' .

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

when I lived in LA our first maid stole stuff all the time and though she didn't speak English she was not illegal. Our next one was legal as well and she took things every once in awhile. Finally, our third maid who was legal was great and I loved her and I would always hide my clothes in the closet cos I felt bad because she did so much for me. I even told her to do less but she came every day and cooked and stuff. I said you don't need to make my bed she would still make it. That was so fun.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

She didn't mention making beds. That would be nice :) I'm sure it just adds to the price though. The illegals that i have seen don't have a pot to p!ss in so I doubt they're stuffing their pockets they just want to put food on the table and a roof over their house.

my brother's girlfriend used to clean houses privately too. she charged $14 an hour, but the houses she cleaned were spiffy by the time she was through. the majority of the money charged by those corporations does not go to the maids. i really hope things have changed in recent years, because a couple years ago when i read nickel and dimed by barbara ehrenreich, the chapter about her stint as a maid for one of those outfits was nauseating. she said they were only allowed to use a set amount of cleaner and water per room, etc. so essentially bathtubs and such were just swabbed over with the same dingy, germy water used to clean everything else in the bathroom. yuck. oh, and she said they're not even allowed to sip on a bottle of water while they are working, no matter how hot the day is or how strenuous their work is.

"At the Merry Maids, the economics were as follows: the customer pays $25 an hour per cleaning person to the service; the service pays $6.65 an hour to each cleaner." http://www.nytimes.com/books/01/05/13/revi....13gallagt.html

that's an awful lot of "overhead" they're taking in. and it certainly wasn't going towards buying enough cleaning supplies to hygienically clean bathrooms.

as for the stupid illegal commentary-i certainly hope that those that discussed hounding maids over their legal status use the same diligence with every single service they employ day to day, from the pizza delivery guys to the woman you buy shoes from at nordstrom. anything less would just be hypocritical.

neither you, nor anyone else is called any names at any place in my post. i had assumed that since you put this :P after yr comments that they weren't in any way serious. others' comments, unfortunately, were totally serious. and the commentary was ridiculous. i wasn't aware it was necessary to write a disclaimer that "this doesn't pertain to anything nessa has said", but i guess i was mistaken.
