Just a quick question, my mother is a registered notarizer. Would the consulate look at it strangely if she was the one who notarized my Affidavit of Support? Thanks in advance!

I don't know what the notary law says about notarizing for immediate realtives. I know that if I was a notary I could not notarize anything for myself or my wife. I don't know if that extends to parents, children or siblings. A cousin, aunt or so on would be fine.

If you mother is a notary, she is required to have a current notary handbook. The answer would be in that book.

I wouldn't take any chances, get a non family member to notarize it, it's not that much money.

What on earth?

If you have a bank account, just go to your bank.

They will do it for free just because you're a customer.

Wachovia notarizes everything for me at no charge, and even gave me all of my required records for the Affidavit I needed (stacks of paper) showing all my deposits and withdrawels, history, etc, all neatly organized, and done month by month. I'm sure it took the gentleman a good 2 hours to do, and they charged me nothing.

In the end, if your bank charges you anything for some strange reason--just switch to Wachovia!

I don't know if you got the right answer or not, but I'm a notary and the answer is that you can not notarize documents for family members. It's not legally binding if you do. You need someone who is not related, but they can be a family friend.

Where were you? NYS notary law has limits on what you can charge for notarization and for an oath......it's way under $50. I hope you didn't get fleeced.

I think I would not take chances on them questioning anything. I would look for another notary. My work notarized the documents for me free of charge. Most banks will do free or very small fee. BTY I am switching to Wachovia cuz I had to take my statements to my bank for them to prepare the letter then they did it free of charge but for the one month I had misplaced they charged me $1 per page. $5 total but if I had not had all my statements it would have been around $100. Anyway, Good Luck with your process.

A notary can not process any document from a relative. I'd go to your bank or credit union. There is normally someone there that will gladly do it.
